AIMTICIWOON 8ERJION
On re•aesembling at 1.46, Miss
Jennie G
rant Clinton,was called
on
and gave a very iutmeeting
and in-
structive address on "The Teachers'
Agricultural Conference at Guelph,"
In August hurt, The great problem as
to what to teach to stop the great
townward migration of pupils was
the great problem requiring solution.
One of these was the proper teaching
of Agriculture in the ochools. Den-
mark and Holland were cited as the
best examples of the work done in
this direction. There folk and High
Scheele do this work In every school
dietrtet. Great efforts are made there
to teach patriotism as well. This is
an age ofrogress and there must be
greater effort, to train along praetiaal
lines, to teach breadth of thought and
high ideals. Practical farming can
not be taught but the pupil can be
trained to experiment in such as
Schon] gardening, home gardening,
or clubs. Begin with home gardening
by preparing in the Fall, read agricul-
tural books, make school room at.
tractive and also the school promisee.
Children should be taught to play
games that develop the qualitlee of
square dealing in the playground.
The subject was further enlarged
upon by Mies Ida Frain, who spoke.
More particularly of her own expert.
enue'In school garden work and out-
lined the work done in that line.
Mies twain exhibited very interesting
dt'avenge and compositions on the
work, Home gardening work of the
season was brought to a conclusion by
art
exhibition in the schools, with
shorb accounts by the pupils of the
season"e work. By getting pupils to
draw the vegetables, are., grown,
added much to the interest in the
work. The wont in general helped
to develop a better feeling between
the teacher and parents.
Subject; was further clteeussed by
Messrs, Thompson, Holland, Shilling -
taw and Fowler. The general opinion
prevailing was that settee' gardens
would increase the interest of the
pupils and also ineteuse the interest
of the ratepayers. Dr, Field em-
Outsized the importance of paying
more attention to keeping the 5011001
grounds free of wood and in other
ways making the school preniieee

by way of introduction gave a short
talk on general matter's pertaining to
the teacher's wank. Teachers ought
to make a practice of reading or
rnasterlug some particular works or
useful books. The poets Wilfred
Campbell, Robertson, Garman, Law-

very highly of. In speaking of

have every opportunity for silent
reading to develop the thinking pro-

Teachers should change their method
of so much oral reading and permit
the child to develop silent thought
teaching that does not make the
child adiscoverer or thought builder is
faulty, teacher must get into the
right attitude toward the subject of
developing if possible a sympathy for
