It is expected whether the war continues or not tbat there will be e great shortage of grain for were and the prospects are that good prices willbe realized as a result. Canada should give a good account of itself along the lines of Agriculture if the tillers of the. soil hearken to the call. Timm are the days when true patriot- ism may be shown and by word and deed evidence given that we believe Great Britain is doing her duty in stand- ing by her pledge to her allies. P. often costs a great deal to stand by principle but nevertheless it brings its owu re ward. Many a million men are rauged against one another in s death struggle who should clasp bands in brotherhood Somebody will have a black sic to answer for. TORONTO has beendoing herself proud in her gifts of men and money to aid the Motberlaud but surely there was a better way to pad out the finances than boxing in o bont,or in other words a g series of prize fights. The Queen City may think it as all right but many au outsider will regard it as a great mis• take. The fellow with the black eye or bleeding nose will have a practical idea of what "battering" means without going to the battlefield in France. Letter from Mrs. iallisr Following letter is from Mrs. Geo. Failis, now in Liverpool, England, and was written to Mrs• W. F. Stretbon, her sister, of town, from wbom 'Tern POST secured 1b to give our readers the iaterest- iugpartioulars :-- Mx —MY OWN nbARssc ANNA •` -Since our re - taro from the beautiful Lake District, .on August 4th, we have heard and.wit- nessee many signs of war, euoh as no living person has Over known. Just after England declared war on Germany, everyone was alive for preparation, Soldiers were seen everywhere, fortifica- tions throughout the Empire were begun and all last week after we got home, George was busy driving the officers about in our mobor. Be bad the Captain and Lieutenant of the Royal Lancashire Engineers and was swanking around with them, They were - busily engaged bar- ricading, .fortifying and entrenching bridges between Liverpool and Southport. George took Kathleen and I for a little sun outin the country last night just to. see what they had been doing and one wonid hardly recognize the place at all. Tho bridges which cross the river are built round at either aide with dozens of sand bags, holes builb near the top for looking through and shooting through if necessary. These are dieootored so as not to be noticeable and branoltes of tress eructed here and there to look natural only about a 12 foot way is open and every one crossing these bridges ie stopped by sentries on duty and eoldiers ate camped all about. In Waterloo there ars hand. rode of huge motor carriers and thousands of eoldiets camped' in a park where their tents are pitched and these are befog called away and snit from Liverpool, we know nob where, bat :expect Rio to Bel- gattn. Thoueabee of fine, motor okra and, motor wagons and horeea have been ootituiattded by the military authorities. 'They hays experts who Sift die priori en whatever they dee and want and they just tltnhetineoitenexotgand tpree eight tosc it camerae Removes Dandruff Just because your halt 'is full 01 dandruff, titin, streaky, dull and. never will do up to look pretty do not despair, Beautiful hair, thick, Suffy, lustrous and absolutely free frorn dandruff is only a matter of care, Parisian Sage frequently applied will work wonders. Just one ap- plication stops itching head, removes, dandruff and all excessive oil. It goes right to the hair roots and furnishes the nourishment needed— the hair becomes soft, fluffy, abund- ant and radiant with life, Parisian Sage nob only saves the hair but stimulates it to grow Icing and heavy. Get a 50 cent bottle from Jas. Fox at once. There is leo other "Just -as good." right here in Waterloo huge and powerful motor vehioles from different parts of Scotland 'and England, .all the way from Edinburgh, Newcastle, Glasgow and to hear the broad acorn o t f fine brave sol tdiera from the North and again from the Mid- lands and the South of England. One sees names on the vehicles, telling they have - belonged to -firma in Sheffield, Birmingham, eto. A number left Water- loo lest night for Preston, enroute to some other places for hospital work and, amongstteem the father of one of -Kathleen's little playmates, a dear little fellow of great intelligence. He belongs to. the ambulance Corps and will no doubt be of great aeeietance to some poor wounded English soldiers, but be has arse signed for active -service 11 required. We may orr may not see him again suet as others there, , . Is it "Hob's terrible situation' I impose that there in our dear beloved Canada :the enthusiasm ie Wilkes great as1 ho49, It thrills us hone torsed - -'nt the handsome 'gifts 'from our. dear homeland and we • all think it splendid for Canada to offer 1,000;000 bsge' of dour' end eo it is, Everyone here seams to be trying to do eocaebhing for the welfareof the poor 4ol111ere; Only yester- day .wherein a-sbop.the owner showed n0 a pair of,lovely .avarm wool Books he has just finished for some soldiers in need and 'he was going• to knit another two pairs. George told - me to begin and make over• things and so I intend to next week. If only all help even a little it will be nice. Our little darling is also making some- thing for the. soldiers and purposes mak- ing a handkerchief, dear little Kathleen seems to understand. We were on the shore last night and it is surprising to see, bow everybhing imaginable is being done for our safety. The great search lights on each aide of the river were ewitohed on at the sound of a gun wbioh went off to notify them, as they were turned-,-' d and across our path it was atm.' -.,'ng. These lights are kept on alt through the night and the river is patrolled right out to the bar. Noship is allowed up the river or to pass the bar without first answering the signals and reporting herself, then all are boarded and searched before approaching Liverpool. On Thursday, Aug. 6th, about 6 o'clock in the morning, we were wakened by a terriffio report from one of the forte, even Kathleen 'was awakened by it, ehe said "Never mind daddy, its only a door hang- ing." We thought if it was the door of England it was a fine heavy one at any risk. Well we all got dressed and went to the shore and saw that it was a Norwegian sailing boat of good size. that did not answer the signal ' satisfaotorly. The shots went across her bows, the water splashing right over the boat but nob until quite a dozen shots from the forte were fired did the vessel stop and burn round. Theriggiog even was shot off the ship and the masts left without sails. Officers from a police boat oloee at hand were very soon ou board to search. Ib is said five German' spies and a number of horning pigeons were on board but in any case it was a very exciting scene and caused =oh alarm in the early morning. Business he very r quiet- here of course. e I trust the war will 'be speedily ended and save the lives of many, many brave men, who have eo willinglyvolunteered for service.' I thought I'd just let you know, as cheerily as I could in this little town, how we are being protected and how England is helping the .brave Bel- gians against those poor Germans, who are foroed into this by the Kaiser. Your own, Marie. 10 Wesley St., Waterloo, Aug., 15th, 1914. A PRAYER. God of our Empire, God of our Land, God of our Destiny, In whose guiding Hand There lieth the Fate Of ouv dear Motherland.
