Some Timely !lints.
Reed 'trimming on hats as esopu-
lar •wb the 'moment. T1te reed's —
1ong, lance -shaped leaves -- are
anitcle in various :shades and colors,
but Clic •bliucic are most used. One
striking hat 'showed reeds of red, a
sleep, sof; &hath with heads of
gladiolus fastened oddly along the
reeds. The black reeds, three or
four of them grouped together; are
especially smart as trimming for the
all -black stat, Combined"with blank
ribbon they give air the trimming
necessary.
About the Neck.
Now Chat the season for furs is
far behind us many warren feel the
need of some lightneck covering.
This the neck ruff or ruche of tulle
or 'ribbon fills. The tulle ruche is so
fragile that it can be relied on to
last only as long as a dancing frock
Jests; bub while it lasts it is charm-
ing. The ruff made of taffeta is far
more durable. Usually there is a
little ruching of pleated tulle to
stand next to the throat and that
lends an air of daintiness to the
whole ruff. It can be renewed
whenever it becomes worn or wrink-
led.

The Bride or Bridle.
r'tl
t
Tile bridle of black velvet is still
used on some of the new chats: Some-
times, too, it is of colored satin or
silk, -softly folded and fastened un-
der a flower. On one smart . lab
there is a bridle of six roses, six or
seven of thein, stretching under the

Silk Belts on Blouses.
A favorite way of finishing the
waistline when separate skirts and
blouses are worn is aribbon or silk
• belt. Wide ribbon ,that can bo laid
in folds or taffeta or satin can be
used. One-way of giving a smart
finish to'tlhese belts is to work but-
:bonholes in two little pointed ends
of ribbon in the front and button
these over colored glass or balm
buttons.
Silver Beaded Handbags.
Very attractive are the •small silk
• handbags, beaded with silver beads,
clasped with silver clasps, mounted
on •silver frames and carried by sil-
ver, chain handles. Old blue and
roses are two favorite colors ler
these bags. The beads are applied
in the outline of a simple design
that extends from the bottom of the
bre about three-quarters of the dis-
tance up.
For the Small Girl's Coat. •
Separate oallar and ouff sets are
made for the smallgirl's coat. Tor-
• chon and valenciennes, sometimes
shiny and Irish point—are combin-
ed in these collars and cuffs, and
"tihey give a particularly dainty and
fresh appearance •to the simple,
dark coats of serge or gabardind on
which they are used.
For the All White Frock.
To carry with the all -white cos-
tume there are handbags of Irish
lace, lined with white taffeta er
muslin. They are made with ere-
oheted handles, rope -like in appear-
ance. The bags are fiat, wide en -
t velopes, fastened with a flap that
buttons neatly over crocheted but-
tons; usually two of them.
Crepe de Chine Handkerchiefs:
A novelty is the orep•e de chine
handkerchief. It is made in •a11 the
lighter colors—soft, dull blue, pink,'
yellow in several 'canes, and gray
are especially attractive. Some of
these handkerchiefs have hems an
inch wide, of a different color. Some'
have self -colored hems, either wide
or narrow.
Suede asks! Patent Lcatlfer.
One of the smart new bags is
oracle of •suede, with a pointed end
of patent leather or black dressed
kir:!. This sort of bag is especially
good when ib is carried .by a woman
wearing eshoes with Opole vamps or
heels and uppers of gray or tan kid,
to snatch 'the bag.
The New Plait! Bags.
The new plaid bags are quite' dif-
ferent 'from the brilliant ones of
the early spring. Tlhey are mantle
cf gray or tan twilled silk Inc' the
upper part, and with stripes in
dull, eaf't colors for the lower part,
and bhoy are ended with a long tas-
eel in :the color of the top of the
bog.

PERFECT HEALTH
DUE TO THE BLOOD
No Girl or Woman Need be Con-
stantly Ailing and Unhappy.
Nature intended every girl and
every woman to be happy, attrric-
tive, active and healthy, •Yet too
many of them, find their ,Lives sad-
tithed by suffering—nearly always
because their blood is to blame. All
those unhappy girls and women
With colorless cheeks, dull skins
and sunken, lustreless eyes, are in
this condition because they have
not enough g+oocl red blood in their
veins to keep them well and in the
charm of health, They suffer from
depressing weariness and periodical
headaches, • Dark lines form raider
thous' eyes, their heart palpitates
violently after the slightest exer-
tion, and they are often attacked
with fainting spells. These are only
a few of the miseries of bloodless-
ness. Nothing can rescue girls and
women from the inevitable decline
that follows anaemia except a gen-
erous supply Of new, rich red
blood, and nothing has ever proved
so successful in creating red, good
blood as Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
for Pale People, Thousands and
thousands of girls and women owe
their good health and charming
complexion -to the use of this medi-
cine. Here is ono example of its
power to cure. Mrs. Rose Italli,
Toronto, Ont., :Ave, "For a long
time I suffered, with anaemia,
ner-
vousness and general
debility, in
fact I was beginning to feel ,a posi-
tive wreck. I tried several medi-
cines and emulsions. For a time I
would feel better for taking them
and then the effect would wear off,
leaving me worse than before. The
continued drain on my health al-
tered my appearance, my friends
telling me T had a haggard and
worn appearance. -This naturally
did not help to improve me, as you
know no woman likes to be told she
looks "worn out." Finally Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills were suggest-
ed and my husband gob me asup-
ply. I used them and found the
result good—not only good, but
the benefit lasting, and I am now
enjoying perfect health, have a
good colorand have regained my
natural buoyancy. I trust my let.
ter of gratitude may be the means
of helping others who are suffering
as I was."
New health, new strength, new
vitality follow the fair use of Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills. You can get
them from your medicine dealer or

Fifty thousand natives have been
hired for the work of building the
road, They will "work unda`P the

are noted for their obstinate ca. tui -
balism, Although the pro +i has
been •suppt'essed wherever 1 isible
by the British gilicials, tins Niger-
ians in the depths of this w l,d 'coun-
try frequently find an opp o.tunity
to indulge in their peculiar taste.
They attack an isolated village, de-
stroy the !souses and feast upon the
inhabitants.
Sometimes they take their victims
to a lonely part of the forest, keep
them in a. corral and fatten them up
for e great banquet. Several times
the. white men have accidentally
stumbled Upon the hiding -place of
these destined victims of the canni-
bals,
Many explorers and scientists
have asserted that the cannibal
tribes of Africa were more indus-
trious, courageous, and intelligent
than tliei•r innocent neighbors. The
brutal and unscrupulous exploiters
of the Congo Free State under' King
Leopold, took advantage of this
fact by employing cannibals to lead
and drive the other natives. The
white men, it has been asserted, de
liberately euconragecl cannibalism
and offers! :portions of human flesh
as a reward for bringing in large
quantities of rubber.
The white engineers and workmen
will have to
guardrd themselves care-
fully,
for the cannibals believe that
white flesh is the greatest kind of
meat. :By eating it they imagine
that they will acquire the clever-
ness and other qualities of the de-
ceased person. Very few natives
aredaring enough now to attack
white men, but there is no knowing
what they might do•in a moment of
excitement, •.Half "e dozen white
inen in a jungle 500 Telles from help
may be in a delicate situation.
Dangers from lions and other
wild animals will be very great.
During the building of the Uganda
railway hundreds of -laborers were
carried off by lions, and in recent
months the beasts have walked into
railroad cars and snatched off de-
fenceless travellers. .
In Nigeria lions ars even more
numero>pis than in Uganda. Their
numbers depend largely on the
amount of food they can find.
Elandb, antelopes, and 'other game
of various sizes are so abundant in
Nigeria that the lions find inex-
haustible food. • S•ometimes as many
as 50 or 60 lions lurk in a patch of
-jungle a few acres in extent, near
a drinking plaice where the food ani-.
• mals gather.
The new railroad will run along
the river banks and will cross the
favorite hunting places of tlis lions.
There will be a tremendous. di's-
turbance among the animals.
