constable and served at Calgary.

once more promoted to sergeant. in
July, 1896. and reached a step higher
in 1898, his services in Klotdyke end
other places getting him the rank of
staff sergeant.
In 1901 he received a commission Bu
the Fifth Canadian Rifles, having
secured a year's leave of absence to
fight the Boers ; but when his men-
panyteached Cape Town peace was
already deeltued.
Returning to Canada he again took
up his position as at non-commissioned
