Jet Beads on Bags.
Net is increasingly used as the
season advances, Black leather
bags are now trimmed with small
jet 'beads, embroidered in intricate
designs in the leather. The band
of embroidery is often finished with
dangling bead firings. Bags are
made of jet beads strung together
and mounted over colored silk. The
beads used in these hags ai'e round
and smooth and somewhat dull.
Collars for Muffs.
Net and chiffon are mnsh used
in combination with fur for collars
and muffs. Hugo muffs of black or
colored fox have ruffles about the
hands of wide pieatings of cream or
pure white net mounted over chit -
fon. Sometimes the collars to wear
with these cuffs are finished at the
ends with wide, fiehu-like frills of
tulle and chiffon.
Novelty In Handkerchiefs.
Net -edged handkerchiefs are a no-
velty. They are made, some of
t -em, with ruffled net, about an
in,th wide, about the edge and some
of them with a plain net hem. The
net is of a good quality and there-
fore washes and wears well. Net
ruffles are not the only s ' ruf-
fles that are shown on 'ter -
chiefs. Handkerchiefs mz : of
crepe de chine have tiny, snife-
pleated ruffles about the edges. The
crepe de chine used is cream white,
of a heavy quality, and the pleated
ruffles are full. The handkerchiefs
cost about 80 dents each.
Velvet Flowerft Popular.
One big velvet flower is the thing
at present, A huge purple velvet
rose, with many petals, or a huge
red nameless flower, with four
squared petals -either one is strik-
ing and in good form. With the
increased use of velvet flowers their
beauty has increased. Perhaps
their price has increased, too, but
they are really worth every cent
that is asked for them, For they
are carefully made and are in good
style and color.
)Mlle Sashes with Beads.
Tulle sashes are made with bead -
edged ends. One, of black and
white tulle used together, has a
deep bead ornament on the end,
made of beads of gray, green and
silver. The ornament ends in a
long bead fringe. Sometimes pink
and white, blue and white, black
and green and other color oom;bin-
ations of tulle are used, and har-
monizing bead ornaments are used
with them.
Attractive House Shoes.
Blank suede shoes, with French
heels and pointed toes, are em-
broidered with silver beads across
the toes and the lower part of the
instep.. They are cub away over
the upper instep and ankle and are
laced neatly to the top with inch -
wide black satin ribbons, which tie
at the top in a smart little bow.
Chenille to Border a Stole.
Chenille fringe, formed of lengths
of white chenille cord albout four
inches long, is used to border the
ends of a wide ermine stole. Each,
string of chenille is tied at the
dangling end with a little black
silk, " and the stole is piped with
black satin, so in spite .of the fact
that no tails are used with the er-
mine, the stole is black and white
in color scheme.
Gives Point to a Garment.
A touch of 'blank is always in place
to give point to a white garment.
And no matter how many predic-
tions there may be that black and
white will not have high favor in
combination, no matter how mneb
the prediction may' be proved to be
correct, so far as the colors of the
principal materials of ;which gowns
and suits and coats are made are
concerned, a touch of (black will al-
ways be used to give character to
white. Many of the white tulle
nothings have a filmy black silk
thread worked over the hemmed
edge of the tulle. A single length
of black velvet ribbon, very nar-
row, hangs pendant, with, some or-
nament on its end, from the neck
of some of the daintiest white net 0
blouses. Black -beaded hatpins are l
used with all -white hate. A touch
;or two of blank embroidery is
worked into white satin slippers.

Ohildren Often Seem Pining Away
And Ordinary Medioiue Does
Not Help Them
The health of ohiidren between
the ages of twelve and eighteen
years, particularly in the case of
girls, is a source of serious worry
to nearly every mother, The growth
and development takes so ranch of
their strength that to :many oases
they actually seem to be going into
a decline, The appetite is fickle,
brightness gives way to depres-
sion; there are often serious head-
aches, Sts of dizziness, or occa-
sional fainting end a complaint of
weariness at the slightest exer-
tion. Ordinary medicines will not
bring "relief. The blood has Ile,
come thin and watery, and the
child must have something that
will bring the blood back to its
normal condition. At this stage
no other medicine can equal Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills. Their whole
mission is to make new blood,
which reaches every part of the
body, bringing back health,
strength and energy, Mrs, James
Harris, Port Rowan, Ont,, says:
"At the ago of thirteen my daugh-
ter began to look ver- pale, and
seemed listless and always tired.
She did not take interest in her
school work or in those amuse-
ments of girlhood. In fact she just
seemed to drag herself about, oom-
plaining of always being tired;
did not eat well, and did not sleep
well at night. I took her to our
doctor who said she was anaemia,
and advised me to give her Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills. She took
the Pills for nearly two months,
when she was as well and lively as
any girl could be, gained nicely in
weight, and has since enjoyed per-
fect health. I aan quite sure that
what the Pills did for my daughter
they will do for other pale, weak
girls. I have also used Dr, Wil-
liams' Pink Pills myself with the
best results and can only speak of
them in terms of greatest praise."

Egyptians Divided Day.
The early Egyptians divided day

Manitoba Indians Pass )Resolution
To Guard Against Fire.
Probably nowhere else in Canada
is there a stronger co-operative
spirit in forest fire protection than
has been developed by the Chief
Fire hanger of the Dominion Gov-
ernment among the rangers, In-
dians, trappers and packers of the
Northern Manitoba Fire District,
says a Forestry branch press bul-
letin. The work among the In-
dians has been especially beneficial,
for in the past they were notorious-
ly careless, especially in leavin
camp -fires burning. But, largel
owing to the energy and initiativ
of the Chief hanger, the attitude o
the Indians has been changed from
one of indifference to one of keen
interest, so much so, that that of-
ficial writes: "The conservation of
the forests has become as red-hot a
topic out here as real estate in the
West,"
Recently, when treaty -money was
being paid to the Indians at Cross
Lake, a special council meeting of
seventy-five to eighty Indians was
called, at which an animated dis-
cussion of forest fire protection took
place. The Oltief hanger writes:
"While the meeting was in pro-
gress, the Indian Agent anti party
came, but to the surprise of many
the meeting held no interest till, by
a standing vote, all asserted their
willingness to help in the protec-
tion of the forests from fire. The
chief and councillors wished me to
convey to the Director of Forestry
at Ottawa .this, their resolution."
Whenever possible such councils
are attended by the Ohief Ranger,
and all Indians promising to co-
operate with the Dominion rangers
are presented with a metal badge
of office. The most intelligent of
the Indians are engaged as regu-
lar fire -rangers by the Dominion
Government and do very conscien-
tious work. Although the patrol is
difficult, -being done wholly by
canoe, and the weather is often in-
clement, the eighteen fire -rangers
in this district average about eight-
een miles a day, including Sundays,
throughout the manner.
During the whole season, no seri-
ous damage was done by fire al-
though many incipient forest fires
were extinguished, a fact that
speaks well for the efficiency of the
patrol and the value of the oo-oper-
ative spirit inculcated in the In-
dians.

If you want to know how to live

of people who have done it to give

that since he was a boy he smoked

SHORTER DAYS IN LONG AGO.
Contained Only Ten Hours 56,000,-
490 Years Back.
In a lecture at the Royal Acad-
emy in London recently oD the
movement of the stars, Professor
H. H. Turner stated that 48,000,000
years ago there were but sixteen
hpurs to a day and twenty-nine
days to a month.
Some 10,000,000 years before that
the day was ten hours Jong, and
going bock still further into the re -
ceases of time, it was reduced to
one hour. That, explained Prof,
Turner, according to The London
Chronicle, was when the earth and
moon were close together -when
they had recently parted company,
in fact, and had started on their
career as separate bodies.
The principle, aid Prof. Turner,.
applied to a very large class of
bodies in $lie sidereal system -the
double stars. Astronomers knew
two stars in the sky so close toge-
ther that it never had been possi-
ble to separate one from another,
even through the best telescopes,
though it was known that one of
them was very considerably bright-
er than the other, and it was env -
posed that one was describing as
orbit around the other.
At the other end of the scale
there were some eters that had not
completed their orbit in the century
since they were described by Hers-
chel]: Some of them might occupy
200 or 300 years, and there were
even instances in which the orbit
would occupy thousands of years.
The masa of the changes in the
Length of our day, said Professor
Turner, was the effect of the tides
on the earth's rotation. The moon
raised two tides --one side because
she pulled away the water from the
earth, on the other because she
pulled away the earth frons the wa-
ter.
