A regular storm period, which, be-
gan the last two clays of September,
will be central on the 1st, extending
to the 4th. This period will have the
combined forces of Vulcan, Mercury,
Earth and Jupiter bearing upon it.
The new moon being at au eolipse node
cm September 29th, will greatly aug-
ment the tendency to earthquake and
volcanic disturbances up to the 4111 to

especially in the Southern- States,
would be most natural at this period,
with boreal storms of great energy

there. In this event there will be
danger of tornadoes over the central,

Atlantic coasts. Rains will reach
most interior sections, with probabili-

NEWSY LETTER FROM CALIFORNIA
DEAR. Mx. KExa --1 thought it might
interest a tees to know what sort of
weather we have. Seeing it is so mild
in Winter one would think it must be
like s furnace in Summer but not so.
It is cooler than the Atlantic coast,
warm in the middle of the day but cool
m rnings and evenings. September is
the warmest month and certainly it
was. They have not had it so hot for
30 years. One day it was sr5 in tie
shade and not below too for the first
two weeks. I heard one lady say she
was trying to cook an egg on the side-
walk. It is much cooler again. We
have had no rain for two months and it
i4 a wonder •ahiugs look so green.
Nothing burned up but the grass and
we never see clouds of dust like at
home.
The second crop of vegetables are in
aid t ill be ready in November. They
expect rain next month when grass
will get green and roses bloom.
Flowers are best in Winter as there are
not so many in bloom in Summer.
Grapes are being picked and drying the
raisin and seedless grape. A good
11150yare grafting table grapes on to
the wine vines as they get zic a pound
for them, while They only get $s a ton
for the other at the winery. Figs are
being picked and prepared for shipping,
Peaches are not so juicy and nice as tee
Niagara, sell for $r a bushel. The
oranges are finite a size and orchards
are irrigated once a month. Fruit is
being picked all the year beginning
with oranges in January till December
the olives. Mexicans and Pips do - the
most of the picking. Birds ere very
hard on the fruit,
The bungalow style of Houses is
very convenient, no steps nor stairs, not.
even a cellar. There are built-in cup-
boards, sideboards, glass cabinets. etc.,
so that one does not require to buy
much furniture. In the kitchen there ,s
the cold closet with open screened top
and bottom through which a current o1
air ascends from under the house to the
roof and in this land of cool nights we
can keep milk and butter all Summer
without ice, unless it gets up to 515
when we have to call in the iceman.
Nearly every one sleeps out in their
porches all the y ear. They open into an
inside bedroom or dressing room.

people from the cities, 800 went from
here on their annual holidays, They
have all sorts of amusements and all
along the pier men sitting fishing, oue
old lady getting more mackerel and
smelts than any of them.
We have had fires in the mountains
and it has been very bard work getting
then out in this but weather. They
were afraid for Mount Low where they
have the elevated railway that takes
passengers up 3500 feet and for Mount
Wilson where they have the Carnegie
Observatory but I see bythe papers
they have it tinder control.
We had a call from Mrs. Walter
Jackson and Mr and Mrs. Logan (Elsie
Jackson). They drove out in their
auto. I never saw Mrs. Jackson look-
ing better. Mr. Logan is a very busy
man with itis three stores to look after.
We spent a day with them at their
lovely bungalow in Los Angeles.
People are beginning to come from
the East for Winter. There is a
Sanatorium opened at the foot of the
:mountain which will likely be filled
soon.
Jim is keepiug better and has gained
