Company hold a strong glace in the
thought of its patrons, as was evideoced
by the largely attended annual meeting
Wednesday of last week at Gortie.
Few institutions of the kind eau point

Directors. The good judgment shown,
the careful but generous settlements of
risks. competent management in head
office, and a good class of agents have
been characteristic of the company
since organization and never more
noticeable than today with its breadth
of business and the standing enjoyed

the idea of reducing postage to 2 cents
was laughed at by skeptics but when

heaped up it was shown what clear

Probably so but what about the vast
increase of business at charges that, in
the main, have stood for long years.
Many of our Parliamentarians might
show more enthusiasm for the interests
of the public as far as railway rates are
concerned if they did not travel dead

that the earnings on the capital ^in•

Some of the liquor men have • raised
objections to the Women's Christian
Temperance Union and other Societies
having anything to say or do with re
gard to the sessions of the coming
military conference to be held at Ottawa
during February to which they have
been invited. Some.formal objections
in the nature of letters have been receiv
ed by the Militia Department since the
announcement of the invitation was re-
ceived. Interviewed with regard to i'
Col Sam Hughes, said the different
womeu's societies were invited to the
confe, enca not with regard to the sale
of liquor in the camps That question,
he stated• he settles himself. But he
places high value on the assistance of
the women of the country and their dif-
ferent organizations all over when the
soldiers are in camp. They have hither
to taken a great part in furnishing
musical evenings and concerts for the
men and thus helping them to spend
their evenings in a profitable manner
The suggestions of the women's oreani
zatious in the conference with regard to.
these matters will be sought during the
coming conference.
