Canada is good enough for us, A new trust has been discovered in one of the American cities ening pick- pockets. Certain districts are assigned to the members and a central exchange assists in diposal of the receipts The aoth century has it for cuteness and the miu[ocs of the law have their best efforts well taxed to shorten the rascality of those who coustantly prey on the unwary. 53 was quite a majority for Tax Re. form to be sat upon in the Ontario Legislature but if Sir James had too supporters in the House the adverse vote would have reached the century, Wonder where the men were whose private opinions were favorable to the reform ? The party whip likely brought them back into the traces. 7'x1. Howick Mutual Fire Insurance Company hold a strong glace in the thought of its patrons, as was evideoced by the largely attended annual meeting Wednesday of last week at Gortie. Few institutions of the kind eau point t0 as many veterans on its Board of Directors. The good judgment shown, the careful but generous settlements of risks. competent management in head office, and a good class of agents have been characteristic of the company since organization and never more noticeable than today with its breadth of business and the standing enjoyed uv the Company. How do you think a r cent letter 1,•,aage rate wauld work ? When it took S cents to send a letter (and a deficit in the Postoffice Department) the idea of reducing postage to 2 cents was laughed at by skeptics but when rate went into effect and surpluses were heaped up it was shown what clear thinking and good judgment meat co I d do. ('here is possibly no service where the gr, at majority of British subjects would so geickly share in the benefits as the Post Office department. The ex- tensions of rural mail routes and the long increases ses to Postmasters in the smaller offices will have to be taken into account but we believe it could be doue. Express rates, telephone charges and railway fares should come down Some may say the cost of op erating these utilities has increased. Probably so but what about the vast increase of business at charges that, in the main, have stood for long years. Many of our Parliamentarians might show more enthusiasm for the interests of the public as far as railway rates are concerned if they did not travel dead head. The annual report of any of the :above mentioned companies would show that the earnings on the capital ^in• vested is tremendous. SotLRauDy has said that Canada is in need of a Third party owing to the crookedness of the two parties. We are not so sure about [bat. tor chances are some of the sante old manipulatiors would get hold of the steering wheel of No. 9- Abetter way would be for in- dependence [ deuce enough in the rank and file of the present parties to rise up and say a tete things and make the parties know that 'hey are the seryauts of the people, n)1the masters. "Kicker.' may be ap. !flied as a new title to those who speak cut but sueb men are the real friends to their respective parties and 1 not their nemies. It' many instances the coun- try is being sacrificed to the greed and crookedness of some who follow party leaders apparently solely for the loaves fishes and what's wanted, in our opinion, is 3” go after the men who permit these niers; with the curry comb and let them Ruud/ that there must be such chare°. leris 'es in political life as "public trust," "unswerving fidelity," and honor in all things."
