CALL.—Last Thursday Ernest S. Coop.
er, son of the late Chas, R. Cooper,
formerly of Brussels. died at his home,
233 Winchester street Toronto and was
buried on Saturday afternoon. De-
ceased learned the trade of machinist
in the Ronald Fire Engine Works here
and was a good mechanic. He is sur-
vived by his wife. who was a Miss Jose-
phine Holmes, They have no children.
Mr. Cooper never forgot his old assn.

sels a visit. He was gentlemanly, genial
and kindly and made friends wherever
he went. Heart trouble had been both-
ering him for the past year.
RURAL TELEPHONE.— Tuesiay after-

Attendance was not as large as usual
owing to the funeral of the late Jas.
McDonald, the same afternoon and the

P. S, Scott, Edward Bryans and R.
Procter were re-elected as Directors fur
the coming term, Prominent represent-
atives from the neighboring rural sys-
tems were present and expressed their
good will to their big brother on their
success. Further reference will be
made to Brussels Rural 'relephane in a
subsequent issue. Compliments were
paid to the lineman and "Central" staff
as well as Board.
First Carnival of the season was held
on Rruasels rick Wednesday evening.

Editor Hall, of the Wingham Advance
has disposed of his weekly paper to
George Spotton, of that town, who will
take possession on March ist and should
do all right with it. Mr. Hall will re-
move to California where several sous
now reside. He conducted a clean,
newsy paper and will carry with him the
good wishes of a wide circles of old
friends,
LORD'S DAY ALLIANCE — The annual
meeting of Brussels Branch of the
Lord's Day Alliance was held Tuesday
evening in the Methodist church, Rev
Dr Oaten presiding in the absence of
the President. Attendance was miser.

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE.— The
second of the series of entertainments
being arranged by the Public Library
Board came off in the Town Hall last
Friday and despite the fact that storm
raged and streets were heavy with snow
a goodly audience assembled to enjoy
the Recital ot "The Merchant of
Venice," by W. Gordon Craig. It was
all it was represented to be and for up-
wards of an hour this fine Shakesperan
drama was portrayed by Mr Craig. He
has a good presence, musical voice and
carried his audience with him as he
dealt with the various characters, mak
Mg them very life like and sustaining
the Interest to the close no easy teak
in so heavy a recital. Shylock'' photo
was particularly well taken, The chair
was very pleasantly filled by B. S. Scott,
principal of the Public School. Three
excellent piano duets were rendered by
Misses Minerva Jones and Isabel
Strachan 1 Miss Beryl and Beverly
Oaten ; and Mesdames Rowland and

Mr, Craig expressed his appreciation.

Han HIS GRIP STOLEN,— The Strat-
ford Beacou of last Tuesday says :--
On
—On Monday evening a gentleman from
Brussels left his grip on the local Grand
'1`ruuk station platform, while he assist
ed a rather elderly lady from one train
to the other. When he returned his
grip was missing. He immediately in-
formed the siation agent and a search
was commenced, They finally located
it in the American House where it was
stated that a young roan had left it.
It later d:veloped that in the office were
two grips alike, and in his haste the
young man had taken the wrong one,
which belonged to a Toronto man, The
Brussels ,tau was given his grip, but
as yet no trace Inas been found of the
young man nor the other grip,

gational meeting of Melville church was
held. The reports presented were
quite satisfactory, betokening liberality,
zeal and optimism. Officers were re-
elected and the church is looking for•
ward to a good year under the new
pastor, Rev, Mr, Mann, who will be
here next month.

ham's most progressive and popular
citizens, passed away Tuesday even-
ing in his 55th year, following tut ill•
nese of only a few weeks. Dr. Wil -
sou was graduated from the Ontario
Veterinary College in 1884, and
practised hare for 27 years, disposing
of his practice a year ago Be was
well known professionally in different
parts of Ontario and the Western
Provinces which he visited every
Summer. He was born in the town-
ship of East Wawanosh, adjoining
the town, being a sou of the tate Jas.
Wilson, who was one of the pioneers
of this part of Heron county. He
is survived by his wife, three sons
and two daughter's ; also four broth-
ers and two sisters. The funeral took
place on Friday afternoon to Wing -
ham cemetery from his late residence
and was largely attended. An itn-
pressive service was conducted by
Rev. Suer, of the Congregational
church, Truman, assisted by Rev.
G. V. Collins, of the local Baptist
Church, Pallhrarot-, weret hree
brothers Andrew, t nil William and
George. and three brothers-in-law,
W. J. Currie, Andrew Currie and
Robt. Currie. The wreathe included
one from the I. 0. 0. F., pillow from
the board of directors ot Wingltam
General Hospital, spray from the
W omen's Institute, spray front
Ladies' Auxiliary of the Hospital,
and many from personal friends.
