AS t e cold weather draws near we
all begin to feel an increasing interest
in the Ulster situation --especially if
OUR last Winter's coat is a trifle off

CIritx welfare meetings are being held
in Montreal in which the mothers are in.
struoted in proper and modern methods
of caring for the infants. This is surely
a mission for humanity and should do
touch in the moral uplift,
A WELL written condensation of im-
portant events is presented by the
Weekly Globe on its first page that
gives a general synopsis of the world's
doings in A newsy form. It is a forward
step in this old time favorite Weekly
that presents a bird's eye view to busy
readers,
Toe phonetic style of spelling some-
times jars you. For instance an ex-
change says "Jno. Smith bot a farm
and milk business." It does not look to
us as if "bot" was much improvement
on bought, especially when the new
fangled spelling only appears in the
heading while the old fashioned style
is good enough for use in the item fol-
lowing,
The bye election in the constituency
of Macdonald, Manitoba, last Saturday
resulted in a win for the Government
candidate by a good majority. This is
usually the result of bye elections, par-
ticularly when the leaders went into it
as aggressively as Messrs. Rogers and
Roblin did on this occasion, Mr.
Richardson. the defeated candidate ran
as an Independent but had the Liberal
support largely.
Tars is the age of advancement witb-
out any doubt; One of the newest
things is the addition of an electric fan
to the top bats to keep the bead of the
wearer cool during the heated period.
The machinery consists of a fan, motor
and battery, all controlled by a switch
on the brim. It would be a good idea
for souxe of the Ulster, Ireland, bot
heads to invest in some of this new
headgear. The only trouble is that a
tile hat is not a good style to wear well
in'a sltillaleigh scrimmage.
MAtur and devious are the routes
chosen by people who are tired of life
to make their exit. One ot the latest is
that Cbosea by a Hamilton woman wbo
- fastened herself in the bath tub and
turning on the water, suicided in that
way. The cause is said to be des-
p.rndenev over i11 health, There ap-
pears to be large scope for a "Be of
Good Cheer" society in the world whose
mission will be to forestall such sad
cases by a large diffusion of hopeful and
encouraging things to be found in life.
WHILE the cost of living is an acknow-
ledged fact and almost everything ap-
pears to be on the "boost" except drink-
ing water, there is perhaps some satis-
faction in observing that leiter Nichol,
of Stratford, is able to cater to the
boarders in his castle at less than xo
cents a day while London Tail bas it
figured down to 7 cents. If these in-
stitutions published their bill of fare
the inducement to seek them as board-
ing houses might be enlarged but in the
absence of this information we suppose
people will endeavor to hang on at home
for a while longer.
DESPITE the bump that reciprocity in
naturalP roducts between Cana la and
the United States received at last
Election the imports from the U. S. to
this Dominion have increased by leaps
and bounds. Today the imports have
reached about a million dollars a day or
about double what they were three
years ago. Why is this the case i' Be-
cause of the desire on the part of
Canadians to buy what they desire and
in the nearest market. There is a hp
loyality tbat is not so much in evidence
when it relates to the pocket. Canada
is not increasiug' her buying to please
the U. S. but to snit herself.

A vsaY hopeful outlook for the in-
crease of practical effort on the part of
the Christian churches is evidenced by
many of the conferences held in which
the work proposed to be done was out-
lined in a plain, easily-to-be-uuderstood.
way that should bring early results.
Many of the pinus heretofore have been
too aerial and before people got to
understand them they exploded.
Women folk have in the past faroutdone
the opposite sex in the carrying for yard
of movements for the public
benefit but we are glad to notice a great
increase of interest and effort on the
part of institutions managed by men
that caauot fail to exert au inllueuce
for good. The church that can harness
up its male members and adherents is
going to be the one that will forge a-
head and achieve. I do this there is a
great uecessity fur wise leadership and
the markiug out an program of com-
monplace thiugs that can be accomplish-
ed. An optimistic outlook is not easily
beclouded hence the advisability of get-
tiug after the hopeful things. Do you

Hrn'on Expositor speaks of Brussels
Fair as follows :—The auuual show of
the East Huron Agricultural Society
held in Brussels on Thursday and Fri-
day was agratifying success in every
respect. The weather on both days
was ideal and on Friday the big day
of the Show it could not have been
more pleasant had the Society had the
ordering of the weather themselves.
The favorable conditions the first day
brought out a splendid display in the
Hall. Brussels has the best arranged
and most compact agricultural Hall
in the county. It is arranged that
the exhibits are shown to the best ad-
vantage and the barn like appearance
so common in agricultural balls is en-
tirely missing. The Hall was well
filled and the exhibits neatly arranged
and on the whole there was an excel-
lent display, there being keen compe-
tition in almost every department.
On Friday there was ten immense
crowd present the gate receipts
amounting to $800, Brussels buts up
a big show in .special attractions al
most too much to be got through
with and properly digested in the
couple of hours devoted to the Show.
However it seems to please the crowd
and augment the gate receipts and
these are two important factors in
the life of a Sbow. There was a
really good display of horses, both
in light and heavy. Indeed it would
be difficult to finer a better all round
Mt than was on exhibition on Friday.
In years gone by Seaforth and lixetee
used to excel all other districts in the
horse display but Brussels is rap-
idly catching up and in quality if
not in quantity eau now
fully
hold
its own. !here were not a great,

many cattle, the held of Iv
of Ethel being missing in the Short-
horn classes. However, there were
several very creditable animals in
this class, while the grades although
not numerous were mostly of ex-
ceptional quality, In Sheep and Pigs
there was a very light showing, there
being only one exhibitor in pigs and
two or three in sheep, 'There was a
nice display in poultry. The speed-
ing contests and other speoial atetal:-
tions fully engaged the attentioth of
the large crowd of spectators until
late in the evening and seemed to af-
ford both atnttsement and pleasure.
The Clinton Band also discoursed
sweet music of which they were not
sparing.
The,Seafoith News says t—A, num-
ber from town took in the Brussels
Fair last Friday, which was a huge
success, the one warm weather being
responsible for the large crowd- pees-
ant. Among those from town we
noticed': --Alex. and Mrs. McLennan;
Miss Lily I•Ienclersoe, Dot Reid,
Frank Murray, A. Close, 1I. Car-
nochan, Alex. Wright and ItIrs. R,

tice Riddell, reservedutigment.
Grand Master Workman Mciiiwin};
and other Grand Lodge officers Were
rore ant and the other aide was also
presented.
Mr. Heilmuth attacked the proposed
advance on three grounds.
1. It was not carried by a two-
thirds majority, as required by the
constitution.
2. No notification of the proposed
amendment had been sent to the sub-
ordinate lodges to enable the lodge to
instruct delegates.
8, Chairman of the Grand Lodge
did not comply with the request for a
ballot.
Mr. Johnston replied to the follow-
ing effect
1. It was not an amendment to the
constitution but a matter of business
regulation.
2. The amendment might be
amended in Grand Lodge.
3. The Grand Lodge has control of
its own affairs and the court has no
jurisdiction.
If the dissenters have their way it
means the bankiuptoy of the concern,
as there is not enough coming in to
meet the claims. If the Order loses
three oe four thousand members and
cannot impose higher rates, there's
the same result.
Mr. Johnston pointed out that the
question of rates had been up for a
long time.
"It is not easy to say," commented
the Court. "They are masters in
their own house." Then his lordship
added, "You are between the devil
and the deep sea ; if you don't get
more money, you go to pieces,"
Mr Johnston assented,
Justice Riddell granted the in-
junction until the trial of the action
restraining. the A. 0. U. W. from en-
forcing the advanced rates fixed at a
recent meeting of the Grand Lodge.
Nine members of the Order are su-
ing to prevent the increase and his
Lordship's decision is an interim etre,
unless the parties consent to motion
for judgment, in which event the
plaintiffs get judgment.
His Lordship holds that the propos-
ed raise in rates should have been
submitted to the subordinate lodges
prior to the Grand Lodge meeting.
"Were it the case of an incorporat-
ed company and were it certain that
the proper number ot votes would be
secured to carry the amendment, the
court might not, probably would not,
interfere," says the ?ridge. "I do not
lose sight of the principle laid down
in many cases, that the court will not
interfere unless and until all the do-
mestic remedies are exhausted. There
are many provisions for appeal in the
constitution of this Order, but none of
an appeal from the action of the

Grand Lodge itself and that is what
the plaintiffs complain of.
"I cannot entirely disregard the
consideration of eyil effects upon the
Order which may result from this
order any more than I can disregard
the hardship on old and aging wren
from the amendment if held valid.
"That the Order may suffer if the
present plan is retained is clear
enough. Assumptions of antiquity,
euphonious, well sounding name, the
enthusiasm of fraternity, are well
enough, but when it comes to paying
a death claim, they are found want-
ing. The cold, grey light of a failing
bank account makes perfectly manifest
that cheap ineuraueeis a sit against
actuarial science and the wages of this
sin, too, is death.
"On the other hand, these aged and
aging wen have paid fur years money
which went to pay for the support of
those left behind by t

lieving that, so long as they, dining
their own lifetime, paid their fees as
fixed lot them, their widows and or-
phans would be provided for in like
manner.
"{they now are told that they mast
pay tan increased amount,. which
many of them will find most difficult,
some impossible, to pay, or lose all the
benefits of their past payment of
money which they could 111 -spare. It
would be hopeless for them to expect
to be admitted to another benevolent
society. Their lot is a hard one, Tru-
ly, those who organize such Societies
undertake a tremendous responsibili-
ty. The failure of any such always
results in tragedy.
"I cannot but think that these in-
dividuals have the higher claim to
consideration. I cannot think the
Order is so rotten, so near bankrup-
tcy, that it will go to pieces before a
regular meeting can be held, at which
will appear delegates fully instructed.

into operation, very great hardship
might result."
