good thing for a political party.
WnotvER thiuks the sessions of the
Dominion Parliament and the Ontario
Legislature have been dull and uninter-
esting are wide of the mark as the vete
opposite have been the case. The
Opposition in eacb house have been 01
a very lively gnality and the Govern-
ments, with large majorities behind
thein have usually tallied when it came
to a vote.
REPRE,ENTATIVEs of the West India
Islands are visitors at Ottawa and other
Canadian cities. They came to discuss
increased trade relations with the Do-
niinicm and offer as an inducement a
zo per cent preference over all foreign
countries. 19 return for this compli-
ment they ask a preference on sugars
and tropical fruit. There were to or 12
men in the group and consist of leaders
in the commercial interests of the
Islands.
A Penemak advertising plan is in
vogue in California iu connection with
April 3oth. It is designated as "Raisin
Day" and the people are expected to use
a bill of fare in which this well 'mown
fruit will be the staple. The idea is to
bring before the public this great in•
dustry and show its importance. It is 4
years since "Raisin Day" was inaugurat•
ed and it is said to have become veil
popular. The railways in their dining
cars cater to the day. Canada might
take a hint from the practical suggestion.
AN example of the working out of the
Hydro Electric power cost comes to
hand from au experience of J. R. Mc-
Donald, of the Stratford Thresher Co
who has been negotiating for a new fac
tory site in Guelph, owing to a legal
blockade being raised against the ae
guirernent of more land in the Classic
City. In Stratford the Hydro power
costs $32 oo per h. p while in the Rut al
City the rate is only 21 re 00 or $13 00
less, a decided advantage to manufac
taring concerns in Grietph,
STATI,TICs p.ove that there are 3,geo
people in Oatarto who are in work
houses and the numher is on the in
crease. This is not a comforting state
ment in view of our growth and develop
ment and is not a compliment, to the
family tie, followed system, or some
thing else, that forbade putting away
the "penny for a rainy day." While
charitable institutions may be imposed
upon in many cases it is a cause of
much thankfulness Hint such homes
exist where the needy, aged and direlict
may find comfort and kindness in their
day of need.
090 of the new movements to be un-
dertaken is au exhibition train to tour
from Montreal to the Pacific with an
exhibit of "made in Canada" goods, ac-
companied by representatives of the
various lines and demonstrators of the
same. 8 or iocars will form the train
and May rsth is mentioned as the date
of starting. It will be under the direc-
tion of T. H Race, of Mitchell, as lec-
turer, a gentleman well able for the task
by his training of recent years. The
trip will consume at least six weeks and
should prove of great value to the com-
