"Oh, it's easy enough," he assented.
"I should like to try," she said.
"How bright the axe is!"
Site held out her hand.
"Better not," he said. "It's sharp
as well as bright. and it has a nasty
trick of turning round in the hands
of an unaccustomed person."
Esther coloured and raised her
chin,
"I'nm not afraid. Give it me, please,"
she said, liaughtily.
Jack looked at her fo ra moment;
then, with a scarcely perceptible shrug
of the shoulders, he held the axe out
to her.
"Oh, it's heavier than I thought,"
she said, as site took it; then she bit
her lip. "I suppose it's because I'm
not used to it."
But she was too proud to wait for
any instructions, and standing in
front of a tree, swung the axe back
—slowly, fortunately—and made' a
cut at the trunk. The axe swung
downwards, as it has a trick of doing
when you don't know how to work it,
just gazed an ineh or two from the
bark and fell from her hand.
"That wasn't my fault," she said,
biting her lip with impatience. "The
thing caught something as I swung
it back."
The "something" was Jack's
shoulder, where he could feel a duly
ache and smarting ' which told hien
that he was "touched," as woodmen
put it,
"A small branch or twig, most
likely," he said, quietly, as he put on
his coat. "Have you hurt your hand
twisted your wrist?",
"Oh, no l" she - said, lightly, `".I
shall do it better next timet"
Ile picked up the axe and gave 11

"It's not nearly so deep as yours,
but it's better,' she remarked, look-

it in proper form.
"See? 1 grip it tight—just here—
like this. Theta I swing it back with
the edge this way. Don't get behind
ane; stand at the aide, and I----"
The axe described a magnificent curve
struck the tree, first upwards and
then downwards, and the notch shone
clear and white in the bark,
"1 see! Please," she took the axe,
and, of coura°, held it in the wrong
place,
