ODDFELLOWS ATTEND
ST. JOHN'S CHURCH
Western Star Lodge With Visiting
Brethren Hold Church Service on
100th Anniversary.
On Sunday evening over 50 brethren
of the Three Links attend•e8 Divine
service in St. John's Church when
Rev. F, L. Lewin, Rector, preached
the annual anniversary sermon to
them.
There was a full choir, and the mem-
bers were in new cassocks and surplices
which lent air of dignity and reverence
to the worship.
The Rector took hls text from I
Samuel 18:3, "And Jonathan and David
made a covenant, because he loved him
as 'his own soul." In the discourse,
the friendship between these two was
emphasized as a pattern for all Odd -
fellows. Friendship, the universal need
of mankind, kind, 'pacause man is a gregar-
ious being. The strength of Oddfel-
lowship lies in the fraternity, more
than in its usefulness as an. insurance
society, and It is the spirit of brother-
hood which attracts outsiders.
The sermon was divided under sev-
eral headings: (1) The character of
David whioh atltracted Jonathan; (2)
the character of Jonathan which yield-
ed to David's influence; (3) The man-
ner the covenant was made 'between
them; (4) The covenant soon nut' to
test. A friend when not needed is of
little value. A friend when the whole
world is against you, is the friendship,
which counts. The qualities which
distinguish the friendship were; self-
sacrifice; loyalty and staunch fidelity,
nresent or ab
sent shadow or sunshine.
The result f
o the friendship to ham-
s t
p
s
elves to the nation and to the whole
world. were It dw e upon. i
n. The value- of
a' wise choice of friends was emphasized
and the necessity of not overlooking
the Friend that sticketh closer than a
brother.
During the worship two beautiful
solos were sung by A. Sykes, of Tor-
onto, and 'Wim. Pilkington, of Kincar-
dine, together with an anthem by the
choir.
'Phe service was inspirational and
the congregational singing was very
hearty.
Upon return to the Lodge Room, a
hearty vote of thanks was passed to
the Rector for his fine sermon; to the
Church Wardens, Choir and soloists.
