Checking all Mail.—To count, weigh
and check the postage on every piece
of mail passing through every post -
office and On every mall train in the
country is the task the postoffice de-
partment has before it for the period
March t to April 1. All this informa-

number of hours it lakes to handle
this quantity of mail and the cost of so
doing. The department will thus have
reliable and detailed knowldege when
it attends the next conference with
United'1States rpostul officers which may
result in Canada securing a substantial
payment from the United States. This
tabulated information will also prove
valuable in telling just whet routes
pay, and what are operated at a loss.

FORMER HEAD OF I. O. F.
DIES SUDDENLY
Elliott G. Stevenson, Detroit, died
suddenly at Coronado Beach, Calilornia
where he' had gone for his health.
The late Mr. Stevenson was born in
Middlesex County, Ont-, in 1856, and
was edudated at the Komoka public
school and seminary. His parents
moved to Port Heron when he was 16
and he was called to the bar there in
1877. He was (prosecuting attorney
from 1878 to 1882 and mayor in 1885.
In 1887 be moved to Detroit and built
up a large )practice. He was for many
years vice-president of the Union Trust
Company, Toronto, and supreme coun-
cilor of the 1. 0. F., succeeding Dr.
Oronhyateka, as supreme chief 'ranger
on the latter's death in 1907. This
office he held for almost 10 years.
REV. DR. PIDGEON
TO BE CHOSEN MODERATOR
Rev. Dr. George C. Pidgeon seems
to be the almost unanimous 'choice for
Moderator of the next and last General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church
in Canada.
When the next Assembly 'concludes
its labors the Presbyterian church
passes into the United Church of Can-
ada, so that the pastor. of Bloor Street
Church, Toronto, recognized as an out
standing leader in the unionist ranks,
will have the distinction of being the
last Moderator of the church in the
Dominion.
As nearly as anything can be certain
Dr. Pidgeon seems certain of election
to the chair. The drift of sentiment
in his direction is indicated by the
fact ,that a number of Presbyteries
have nominated him for the post of.
honor. Toonto is one of them, fara-
way Honan is another and Owen Sound
is the latest.
