become much more general than they
now are.
It bee beau found by investigation
tbat in many homes' where there la
just es apt to bo musical talent as in
any others, the musical environment
is at low ebb, partly because that home
tom not possess a piano. Frequently
in such homes there is the feeling that
even it they could afbard the purchase

might even be willing to skimp and
save to afford that private inatreetion
It they knew what one or more of

such parents because It enables them
to locate musket talent in their home,
if each there be, with practically no
ease outlay.

Wanted—A National Anthem
The Government of the Irish Free
State is seeking a national anthem for
Ireland, and a competition hasbeen
suggested as the best means of find-
ing one.
Ouriouly enough, the only European
national anthem written to order was
the Norwegian, computed by the poet
Bjornson: The old Portuguese me
tional hymn is unique in that it was
written by an emperor, Dom Pedro of
Brasil; although the ex-Kalaer an-
nounced during the war that he had
written a • new hymn for the German
nation, Apparently, however, it was
never published:
The famous Basilian national an-
them Is noteworthy in that the tune,
by the oomposer Lvoff, was written be-
fore the words, which` were composed
afterwards by command •cf the Ozer.
The authorship of our own National
Anthem baa neverbeendefinitely set-
tled, Its tune has been appropriated
by bbth Germany and Denmark for
national hymns.

Demand for Bible Proves
People's Real Need.
At the moment of writing I read in
the newspapers that the presses which
print the Bible cannot peep pace with
the demand. Bove did this demand
arise? What maintains it? 'Why do
people buy and read this ancient book,
when they can buy and read ao much
that is newer, fresher and on the sure
face at least, more directly suited to
their twentieth century needs? writes
Basil King in "Harper's."
Of ono thing we can be certain, that
unless these boolts supplied some-
thing which the heart of Europe and
America craves for its sustenance, no
such demand would continue: No-
where else in history, to my know-
ledge, do we rind a group of people, ex-
tremely diverse among themselves, ap-
propriating a whole literature not
their own, which they had no part in
producing, and living on it as tbey
never liveonthe moat vital works of
their own children.
The phenomenon calla attention to
itself, and is perhaps its own best ex-
pilanation.
Demand is always in proportion' to
the quality of the supply, That Is all.
There is no further mystery. It 1s
