origin on Saturday morning Sept. 20th
about one o'clock completely destroy-
ed the tine barn and shed of Ohas.

fire had gained such headway: when
discovered that it was impoesrbie to
save anything. It attracted a number
of people from the surronding catontry
and by their strenuous efforts were
able to save the house. Mr. Dolmage
had thrashed only a few days previous
and his entire crop was consumed,

Ferguson took a trip to Brussels and
visited A. O. and Mrs, Dames, old
friends. This is specially noteworthy
as the former has not done much trip-

passed away at the family residence,
Lot 8, Don. 14, Hallett, on Monday
morning, Sept. 22nd, Maty Cowan, be-
loved wife of Thomas Dougan, in her
67th year, after a few shortdays' ill-
ness of bronchial pneumonia, The
death of Mrs. Dougan has cast n sad
gloom over the entire community.
She was a woman of stirling charac-
ter, who lived a cunsieteut Ohrietian
life and was a sympathiser and friend
to all who knew her. She was a mem-
ber of the Blyth Methodist 'church.
Deceased was born in Hullett Town-
ship and in early girlhood resided with
her uncles, h and D. illctiaviu, 27
years age she was married to her now
bereft. husband, Tilos. Danger], Fun-
eral took place Wednesday, Sept, 24,
and was largely attended by friends
and relit t'vrs. Pallbearers were D.
Watson, John Mills, W. Howatt, J.
Cochrane, John Love and 3, Wells.
The funeral.services were conducted
by her pastor, Rev. A. C. Tiffin, and
interinent took place in Blyth Union
cemetery, Mrs, Dougan is survived
by her husband and one son, Edward,
to whom is extended the sympathy of
the entire community,

It was an enjoyable outing as the
scenes were new to the visitor and l,is
friends gave him a good chance to see
the country. Mr, Broadtont tells some
interesting stories of the East, whose
ways and means of doing• things are
quite contrary to many methods in
vogue here. He'll be disposed to take
another hike later, maybe a wedding
trip.
FINE WOMAN PASSES AWAY.—Loeb

this life in her 60th year. She had
been poorly since last March, dropsy
being the ailment, Funeral was held
Wednesday afternoon to Brussels
cemetery, Rev. Mr, Chandler, deceas-
ed's pastor, taking the service. Mrs,
Barron was born in Usborne township
and afterwards moved to McKillop
township. About 41 years ago elle
was married to her now bereft part-
ner and they lncated on Lot 10, Con,
16, 3 years after, where they have liv-
ed continuously. 8 sons (Archie
George and Alex.) and a daughter
(Mire. "F"trm, Hurst, Mornhlgton town-
ship) were born to the family, The

A WELL KNOWN RESIDENT PASSES

Mrs. Duncan Livingston died quite
suddenly at the borne of her daughter,
Mrs. Alex. Yuill, Sth Con., with whom
she had lived for, some years. Deceas-
ed's maiden name was Mary McVicar
and herbirthplace was the Township
of Vaughan, York County. She was
in her 81st year. 69 years ago she was
married to the late Duncan Livings-
ton, who predeceased her by 18 years,
Rev. Mr. Bell tied the matrimonial
knot. at Molesworth. Mr. and Mrs,
Livingston moved to the 5th line of
Morris township where they lived up
to 25 years ago. 11 children were born
to the home and a remarkable feature
is that all are living. They are

few years, Mrs. Livingston was able to
get about to the last. She passed a•
way quite suddenly and unexpectedly,

Inetitute was, held at Mrs. Pope's
rooms, Wednesday afternoon with an
attendance of 80, the President, Miss
11. P, Hazelwood, presiding. After
the business had been disposed of a
splsndid paper on "Opening our eyes
to the Wanders of Nature" was given
by Mrs. W. S. McKercher, followed
by several poems on the same subject.
Community singing was also a feature
of the afternoon's program. 'Plies E.
McEwen gave a very practical paper
on the care and planting of bulbs.

Brussels Continuation School
Holds Successful Field Day
A flne and well contested program
of games and sports was carried out
last Thursday afternoon, on Victoria
Park and the school grounds, which
were much enjoyed by participants
and spectators. To add interest Blyth
teachers and senine pupils paid a
friendly visit and took part in some of
the events.
Competition was keen and the win-
ners were well chased for the honors.
The whiners were . — Senior Medal,
Jack McCracken, with 15 points
Girls Medal, Doris McDonald, 11
points ; Junior Medal, Carl Heming-
way, if points. Douglas Clarke was
2nd in Senior games ; Luella Cham-
pion 2nd in Girls' competition, and
Jim Smith in Juniors.
The open events, with the exception
of 1st in open 100 yard dash, (captured
by Elliott Blyth), 3rd in 50 yard Girls'

dash, (taken
by Annie Gluten, Blyth),
and Girls'xelay, were won by• Brussels.
Our pupils took both of the Shield
games, thus eecuring it firm hold on it
for tics year.
A lively game of Base Ball between
Blyth and Brussels was played, in
which honors were very evenly divid-
ed, Brussels winning by a score of it to
7. Councillor Armkbrong, town, and
Dr. McIntyre, Blytb, were umpires.
Some of the boys played their posi-
bone remarkably well. Batteries
were ;—Blytlitt liefrron and Elliott,
and for Brussele, Champion and
Oliver.
The Basketball contest was a warm
one between the girls of the Brussels
and Blyth schools directed byMiss
Goldthorpe, Blyth. 'fire homteam
ran away from their opponents in the
first half but the visitors put' up a
strong fight in the second part. Brus-
sels won handily by 84 to 19. Both
teams were heartily applauded for
theft' good work.
Lunch was served to the visitors in
the sohnol house at the close of the
game and a social time enjoyed.
In the evening a Musical and Liter-
ary program was given in the Opera
House, when the awards were &leo
presented.

Coates are to be congratulated ou the
successful outcome of the day's fun
and the way the well planned prograirl
was carried out.
