HURON FLAX MILLS 'TRIAL. — Sea -
forth was a lawyer's Mecca during the
bearing before Magistrate Reid, Goder-
lob, of charges against Fred, and Louis
Lukes, Toronto, of perjury and conspir-
acy. Crown Attorney Seager, assisted
by Crown Attorney Middleton, Owen
Sound, and Mr. Rogers, of Provincial
Department, Toronto, conducted the
prosecution, while Col. Grier. Mr. Cowan
and Mr. Stott, Toronto, acted for the
defendants. The charge of perjury
against Louis Lukes occupied the first
day, and a large number of witnesses
were heard. At the conclusion Magis-
trate said there was no evidence to con-
vict, and dismissed the case. The next
day was taken up with the charge of coe-
spiracy against. Messrs. Lukes of using
the Huron County Flax Company as a
screen to defraud their creditors. Evid-
ence was given that, although Mr. Lukes
bed formed the Company, all transact-
ions wore conducted by himself or his
brother, and that the sum of $265,000
had been deposited in the Dominion
Bank, Seaforth, during the years 1909 20
by Louis Lukes, either in cash or Victory
bonds ; that when the business was turn-
ed over to ibe Company by him he hand-
ed to the Company the entire crop of 1921,
besides $30.000 surplus from 1919 ; and
received in return $2o 000 worth of stock
in the company. Evidence showed that
some witnesses thought they were doing
business with Mr. Lukes and others
thought they were dealing with the Co'y.
There was much crossflring between the
legal lights, Several witnesses from
Toronto ware called and much of the
evidence went to show that Messrs,
