"CompOUtgD insanity" will be the plea whereby 2 Chicago students will strive to cheat the gallows for the foul murder of Robert Franks, The doctors say these young imps "are possessed of an interlocking personality, and together are impelled to the commissission of crime. Some Sanitary experts have tabooed the osculatory exchange on the program of many a wedding, on account of the anger apprehended the d a d from the kiss- ing bug. We don't suppose -this will put a stop to the business but it might not be a bad idea to confine the activ- ities to the immediate relatives, barring 42nd cousins. Tose germ cranks must be old bache- lors who never have been kissed since mamma did it, Interesting letter from India From a Former Brusselite DEAR MR, KERR:- 1.e was my good fortune this Sum- mer to have a glimpse of some of the glories of old India, Since everyone is reading about the political situation here, I thought some of the old Brus• eels friends might enjoy a description of some of the Northern cities, Oaletrtta is probably the moat West. ern of Indian cities, Ie is the city that has developed from the old East India Company, Fort William, and has little connection with the past history of India, It is full of large shops, trams, motor cars, people of every race and hue, and even adver- tises, "American Ice-cream Sodas," But more than all these, there was ons spot I wanted to see—the site of the "Black Hole;" The place is mark- ed only by a slab in the wall of the Customs building. 'There is also a monument in the street near by, Cal- cutta was waren enough to remind us very vividly of what the horror of that soling cell might be, Lucknow was the most interesting place we visited. The old "Residency' is kept in splendid condition. The old entrance is just as it was after the siege, a great brifk gateway, riddled with cannon balls. The tine of en- trenchments, the ruins of the guard room, the hospital, the great Tykana, where the women were guarded, and the Residency itself with the tattered remnant of the flag we all love flying above it, are all there, We saw the spot where Henry Lawrence was shot, the room in which he died and hie simple grave, bearing the ineceiption, "Here lies Henry Lawrence, who tried to do his Duty" We saw the under- ground room where Jessie Brown, in her delirium, fancied she caught the glad sound of the Highland pipes, There is one corner which was guard- ed all through the siege by the boys of defeat, treachery and unparalleled cruelty. We stood on the bank of the Ganges at the spot still known as Nava's Ghat, where the British eel- diere, trusting the word of a treacher- ous foe, perished, shot down like doge, A beautiful white angel in marble, stands with arms folded across the breast and bowed bead, over the well into which Nava cast the babies of the women, and -children, dead and dying, before the relieving force could rescue them, Agra ie a city full of the glory of the Moghule. On the banks of the Jan: na, casting the shadow of its stately form into the waters below, stands the Taj Mahal, famed as the most beautiful building in the world. Everything about itis perfect. It is surrounded by a stately garden and beautiful waterways. The gateway itself is a marvel of art. The Taj is a perfect setting. Every stone in the main structure, the 4 minarets, and the great raised platform on which ht stands, is of purest marble. The orna- mentation is an inlay of semi-precious atones,—lapis, lazuli, malachite, coral, eornelian,—in most graceful designs. Ina land where woman has kuown the depths of degradation and scorn, where she bas been treated as a chat- tle, itis good to know that Shah Jehan a Musulman, raised this vision of beauty in memory of hie queen, "The Light of the Palace." Agra also contains a splendid fort, now used as a garrieon station for khaki -clad Tommiee, but containing the marble palaces of the emperors of centuries ago. We saw the secret paseage by which the treacherous wy were shown a quick nick w a out into the waters of the Janina ; the audi- ence room where the king met his subjects ; the queen's apartments with germ -set walls ; the bathroom walled with tiny mirrors set at differ- ent angles ; the pearl moeque where the emperor worshipped, and so many relics of past glory. We stood on the spot where Shah Jehan, a prisoner in the bands of hie son, cast his dying gaze upon the glory of the Taj, the e lifetime. dr of hi et cam Delhi is not one city. but 8 we were told. We drove to the Qutb Miner, a very lofty minaret, 11 miles from Delhi, From the top of that minaret, one gets a view of miles of ruins, walls, towers, forte, tombs. It seems that each conqueror of Delhi made it a point of honor not to nee the site of the vanquished for his capital. Hence the lines of, ruins are relics of the man kings,Hindu and splendor of y Beyond he ruins the Mohammedan. Beyer t h gleaming white of the buildings of new Delhi and the red sand atone walla of the massive forst now garri- soned by the British, present a strik- ing contrast, We saw also in Delhi the Ridge which the British held duriug the mutiny, and the kashmir Gate which they entered. Many strange stories are afioat from the mutiny days, One lady told of meeting a bent old white woman in a Mohammedan home. Her story wee that she had been taken by acme 1Mohammedane at the time of the Mutiny, as a tiny baby. She lived as a Mohammedan, bad married a Mohammedan, knew nothing of her own people and seemed quite satisfied with life. Benares, is the goal of every pious Hindu's pilgrimages. Itis the dirtiest city I ever saw, The mighty Ganges is lined with temples, set higgeldy- piggeldy along the bank. The bath- ing is very interesting. Each sect has its special place, The worshipper lifts the sacred water in his hands, raises his eyes to the tieing sun, and repeats the prayer, "Thou most excel- lent glory of the sun, may I attain to thee," then eine the water. The water is also poured over the body. 'Every Hindu longs that his ashes may be borne away by the waters of the Ganges, Many journey thither to die, Consequently the burning ghat he al- ways occupied, The body is burned and the ashes la washed into the river, Babies bodies ate weighted with stone and net into the.centre of the stream.
