THERE was a fairly large representa-
tive attendance at the Union prayer
service held in Melville church last Fri-
day afternoon. Quite a number took
part. The offering of 95.45 was handed
to W. H. Kerr, Hon. -President of Hur-
on County Children's Aid Society,
whose headquarters are at Goderich, for
remittance to that worthy organization.
The ladies were thanked for their fore-

his right hand received a bad cut be-
tween the thumb and first finger by com-
ing in contact with the wire belt at the
engine, Several stitches had to be put
in to bind the wound together, We

Mrs, E, T. Greensides, who passed away
at Atwood, Thursday of last week, was
buried at Brussels last Monday on the
arrival of the C. N. R, noon train, She
was in her loth year and wee well and
favorably known. Deceased was a Sis-
ter of John Long and sister-in-law of S.
Wilton. Mrs. Greensides often visited
in Brussels and bad a wide acquaintance

DIED SIIDDENLY.-Last Saturday
Chas, Dalgaleish, Stratford, passed
away at the home of his daughter, Mrs
G. W. Ward, very suddenly. aged 78
years. His wife is a sister to Mrs Jas
Cardiff, Brussels, and was visiting is
Brussels at the time, having come to
attend Mr. Cardiff's funeral last week
Deceased had been a resident of Strat
ford for past re years, moving from near
Bright. Mrs, R. F. Dowsing, Miss
Addie and Will. Card.ff, Brussels,
attended the funeral.
CARD of THANKS. -We wish to thank
old neighbors and other friends for all
their kindness shown us in our trouble
and also for the kind expressions of sym-
pathy conveyed by flowers.

FELL DEAD ON STAGE. -Tile.. sad news
was received here last week of tbe sud
den death of Miss Beatrice, only daugh-
ter of the late W. A and Mrs. Shaw of
Vancouver, B. C., which took place in
New York, Tuesday, 4th inst. Accom-
panying her mother last year they visit-
ed the former's relatives is Sweden and
spent some time in the British Isles and
France and Belgium. On returning'
Miss Sbaw continued her musical edu-
cation and also filled theatrical engage=
ments in New York. It was while en-
gaged in the latter that the sudden
termination came, The report gives

Southern melody to the accompaniment
of her sister Mildred (stage sister) on a
saxophone and of. Miss Helen Leopold
at the piano. The three young women
comprised the musical team known as
the Three Cousins. The audience of
some 15,000 persons thought her fall a
part of the act, until bar sister and Miss
Leopold rushed to the stricken girl's
side, Then the curtain was rung down,
Three physicians applied restoratives
but she was pronounced dead on the ate
rival of an ambulance from Bellevue
Hospital." Mrs, Shaw was spending
the Winter in California, where she has
an invalid brother, when the sad story
was communicated to her, Burial took
place in their home city in Vancouver
To add to the poignancy of the grief the
family had undergone a sad bereave-
ment a year previous, February 261.11,
5923. tobe exact, when husband and
father paid Nature's debt, after a very
brief illness. ,els addition to the mother,
2 sons, John'and Douglas, aged 18 and
14 years, survive. Miss Shaw was
talented young lady and a wide circle of'
friends and her suddeu demise on the
threshold of life is deeply mourned.
Deceased was a neice of Joseph and
Mrs. Sbaw, Morris township, The
father was a former resident of this
localhay and was born in Grey township.

spending a few days in Brussels.
Miss Eva McCracken is home from a
visit of to days with Toronto friends,
V. C. Huntley was able to get home
from Wingham hospital last Tuesday
and will soon be as hearty as ever we
hope.
Last week Mrs Malcolm Fraser, King
street, was visiting at Stratford. Her
tlauebter, Miss Ella, is attending the
Normal School in the Classic city.
Dm Denman, the well known mail
courier, was off duty, for a while. owing
to the somewhat unusual spell of hic•
coughing that was very bothersome.
Mrs Shiobein, Listowel, was visiting
Brussels friends during tbe past week.
She will be better ktlown by her maiden
name, perhaps, Miss Verne Walker.
Miss Fannie Hogg has gone to Port
Hope to renew old friendships. This
WAS het old home locality, although
many charges have taken place since
she came Westward.
Mrs. Wm Coleinau,St, Thomas, was
a welcome visitor to her parental borne.
She came as a attest to the wedding of
her sister, Miss Kathleen Wilton to L,
Callahan, Belleville.
John W. Mooney, a former Brusselite,
who, with Mrs, Mooney and children
have been visiting with relatives in Kit-
chener, was renewing old friendships in
Brussels and vicinity, He looks
splendid and must have a good boarding
house judging by his hearty appearance.

Halpenny, of Elms township, who
was struck on the head by a branch of
a tree on Monday of last week, at
noon, died Sunday afternoon in the
Memorial Hospital, A second' opera-
tion was performed Saturday but re-
covery was impossible. Mr. Halpenny
was 24 years of age midis survived by
hie wife and young son,uet 6 weeks
old, and his parents, Edward and
Mrs. Halpenny, Trowbridge. At the
time of the accident Mr. Halpenny,
was helpinga neighbor, Edward Medd,
to cut down a tree. Deceased was
held in high esteem by the community
and whole -hearted sympathy is ex-
pressed for the bereaved in their un-
expected sorrow.
