Too many people appear to be ejways ready to run into every available siding. They waste golden boors by the "switch cff" habits and often arrive too late at the delayed journey's end, to accomplish the object of their pursuit. We are aware the Commons Tads dip deeper in- to the chest for salaries but they are also further from home and less able to keep an eye on home affairs during the long sessions of the house. There are men i» Parliament who financially were never as well heeled as when in receipt ofeindemtilties. On the one band Cox is painted as a slave driver, a man who deserved the lash and bricks were theoretically thrown, legal and otherwise, that if the Bible rule were the guide "the fellow without faults be permitted to burl the first rock," the willing„ gabby witnesses would likely never have spoken, "Crucify bim" was evidently the fever - heat watchword, Then there are the " slopper•overs" wbo are trying to make it appear that Cox is a saint instead of a sinner and sbouid almost have been presented with briquets inetead of brick- bats. The other extreme. Our private conviction, after reading alt that was said and done, is that Cox sbouid never have been sent to "jug." With the banging ho received and worry over tbe Unfortunate affair to himself aid friends the man might have been allow- ed his freedom with a warning and to all intents and purposes the abject of the investigation would have been served in the judgment of THE POST. DEAR MR, KERn,-Leet you grow impatient and strike my name off your subscription list, I am herewith for- warding to you my small fee neces- sary to avert such a calamity. THE POST comes regularly to our house, with its weekly budget. s# news, as an old friend, and I don't want to be without it, As you will notice by the addrees, we are now in the Sunny South enjoying its balmy sir, fruit and sunshine. It is not jest from choice that I find myself hers but rather owing to a temporary indis- position of health, the result largely of an unfortunate experience that l pass- ' ed through some years ago. I aro hop - in that before loo I willbe g g back in "Sly own, my native land" again, en- gaged once more in my regular work. Meanwhile we thought it would be a pleasant. change to come down here andescape i a the rigors and 'snows of the Canadian Winter once more. We were down here S years ago and en- joyed it, very much. We had a pleasant and interesting trip down here from Calgary by auto, a distance of over 2,000 miles and we came with- out mishap, except the little troubles incidental boa lengthy auto journey. Great changes have taken place in the intervening years. Long Beach, then only a small city, bas now a population of about 100.000, while Los .Angeles has gone ahead with such leaps and bounds that it scarcely seems to be the same place.at all, with a population of nearly a million. Last year Was its banner year in expan- sion. The' building permits for' the year exceeded the $200.000 000 mark, and all the small cities and towns formed about seem to be sharing in the same material prosperity. It's a wonderful climate and its reported era of prosperity with work and wages for all have attracted thousands and thousands from ail directions and it has become a veritable Mecca for the 17. 8. and Canada too, With the touriet and the seeker for employment has come the crook of every kind, and the result is that crime bee increased trernendouely. So bad had it become in Los Angetee a year ago that it en- icyed the unenviable reputation of be. ing the most pronounced criminal city in United States. A. Crime Commie - sten Was appointeda year ago to co- operate with the civic anthorities in an endeavor to curb the crime wave that was sweeping the whole city and blireetening to get beyond all control, Much 'has been accomplished, 'but much ie yet to be done, limit -ups, murders, and thievery are a daily and nightly occurrence. WISHART, Los Angeles, pal. Jan. 28, 1924, Beer W. E. Kerr Writes From Vancouver, Br C. • The following letter from Rev. W. E. Kerr, brother of !tire. J. J. Gilpin. and W. H. Kerry of TH4 POST, of Brussels, le worth a place nn explana- tion of Western life. Mr. Kerr, Who has spent the past 12 years at the Coast city,'ie not preaching at present as his health fagged but he bought a bungalow and several acres of land and is renewing hie youth by a change of occupation and freedom -from nervous strain. He Bays under date of Feb. 5 H er DEAR PEOPLE-1have intended writing so long but time flies and "pro- crastination ie the thief of time" the game as ever, and a host of siwilar proverbs are so true, the days have passed and my letter has been unwrit- ten, Strange as it may appear to you of one who has "retired from active service," I have been so busyI did not find time for correspondence. Our Winters are so very mild work on the ranch can go on as readily from December to February as from May to July. These opening g days of February have been indescrib- ably lovely. Tuday, for instance, a neighbor and I have been pruning my trees, he with coatoff and both bare- headed and feeling no need for wrap of any kind. The cue shone brightly and the air was balmy as on oue of our Bunny May days, Away below and beyond' gleamed the sparkling waters of English Bay, an arm of the great Pacific. True it was a joy to be busy our of doors. We pruned 22 apple trees and to- morrow we will do a little shaping up of cherry and plum trees. I have been busy touch of the time for weeks on our raspberry bushes. Now most of the patch is completed, having only to top a few tows and they will be done till picking season comes along. A woman, living near ue, takes the job of furnishing pickers so we will not be trmubleci on that score. Patch looks fine, 'many of the canes were 10 fee high ft, t h g before being topped and are nearly an Inch fu diameter. Expect a splendid crop in 1924 and should have 25 or 30 crates a day in the flush of the season. My next job is putting ear. rant endoose e • g b toy bnehee in shape, pruning, spraying and hoeing. Have over. 100 bushes all told. Our goats are not milking just now but they are costing almost nothing to feed, so we need not grumble. Every rooming, unless it rains, I tether them in the bush lot to the East of us and tering them in at night, full as the proverbial tick, fed on ealelle (a winter evergreen) fetus, and nibbling from shrubs of all sorts. They certainly are capital at clearing up wild land, and you would be sur- prised at the difference in the parts of the plots where they have and have not been. You would wonder too bowtbey can ramble about to the limit of a20 font chain and not get 8o hopelessly tangled they. would be tied in a bard 'knot. 1 rarely :find them in trouble. A statement in the Daily Proviftce newspaper says Great er Vancouver had increased 50% in population in the last 5 years and a pretltetion by ex -Mayor Gale that it would double its population In 'anoth- er5. It's a wonderful sight to see the ships from all over the world throng- ing ng- itg Burra d Inlet, afters 40 or GO Yowls lying et anchor, waiting for their place at the wharf while perhaps 20 others will be loading or unloading at the docks. Jubilee, our locality, is building up like a veritable city within the city, You will be interested bo know of the course I have been pursuing re- cently, The B. C. University has put on a Short Course in Poultry, Horticulture, Agriculture, &o., and 1 have been a school boy again, 2 weeks ago I took a conree in Poultry, (in which I have been interested as you know for years) which Was very helpful. and on the 18th I etarb in on Horticulture. Program deals with strawberry culture, raspberries, &o., with an illustration as to pruning and the like. The vegetable garden is also on the list. Course only costs $e and gives all sortsof extra; advan- tages. We go out to the new site of University at West Point and they send a big electric bus inter the city for us and bring us back again at the close of the day. A Mr. Rutledge was one of the Poultry Course lecturere, He told me his people lived in Sligo, where he was been. He was a typical Rutledge and Irishman as well, I recently had a surprise. A . Mr, who for some time had one of our, New Ontario farms and owed us several hundred dollars sent me the deed of a farm they had owned a couple of miles from our Thornloe place. They are a fine couple, among the finest. We will have ad- ditional interest in the East as well as the West. Hope everyone is well a8 we are, Bo' I. will say bye bye for this time.
