J. J. MIDDLETON Provincial Board of Health, Ontario Dr. Middleton will be glad to answer questions on Public Health mat• tors through this column. Address him at Spedina House, Spadina Crescent, Toronto In every effort directed to improve- ment of the public health and well- being, t -loo t exer- t ••inofou being, the quest o t cise must be tarsen into account. No i matter what preventive measures are taken against disease, the physical 1m/edition of the individual, whether adult or child, is not kept in perfect condition if hertlthy exercise out-of- doors is not indulged in. The question of what constitutes healthy exercise is important. There are a large , number of people who seem to think that touring around in a motor car provides sufficient exer- cise for the` average person. This is a mistake, but motoring has certain advantages. It detracts the mind from domestic cares and worries, and falces people out of doors in the fresh air. Real physical exercise—the kind that promotes sloop et nights and stimu-atos the appetite, is lacking in the pleasure that a motor ear offers, except in the case of the driver who may get enough exercise if something mechanical gees wrong. Walking is one of the most benefi- cial exercise that eau be had and yet too Little of it is practiced. We bear far too much in the daily papers about A Clever Clerk, The proprietor of a shoo store in New 'Englund is very proud of one of his ynung sons who not very long ago entered the employ, of Iris father, and this pride was much enhanced by the bay's cleverness 111the mattes' of a pair of sheet sold to a stranger. This necessary ,and impor- tant measure towards the health of the people should be fostered and re- commended daily in the public press,,. The papers that continually ofteredl such important advice would gain; favor with all progressive people. The, great advantage of walking as an ex- ercise is that it ean be done at .any time of -theryear and in practically all kinds of weather. There are, of course, many other forms of outdoor exercise such as, gardening, golf, tennis, bowls, rowing,' canoeing, hunting end swimming. On- tario has special facilities for indulg- ing in all these pastimes. Even moun- taineering can be dene—'a most ex- hiliarating form of sport. But what- ever the form of exercise taken, the.. great thing is to get out of doors in the sunshine, on the lake shore or where the fresh breezes blew, In sick- ness or in health there is no better tonic than fresh air and sunshine. Among the trees or by some quiet lake the tired body and mind get a chance to rest and recuperate.
