By a majority of 253, ratepayers at
Paisley voted in favor of the hydro By
law for $24,700. Duly in opposed the
scheme. rhe lines for power and light
will be brought there, a distance of si
miles, from the Eugenia Falls system.
Many farmers on the right-of-way are
anxious to secure the power,
IT is predicted that building costs are
likely soon to take a drop. When these
costs reach a reasonable level as they
are bound to do eventually, there is every
probability that a building boom such as
Canada has never before experienced
will follow. The scarcity of dwelling'
houses in cities, towns and villages is
becoming more and more marked.
IT is believed that Cbatbam and Kent
counties will soon be the centre of a big
silk -growing industry, Promoters who
are trying to interest the farmers in
cultivation of the silk worm are now in
Chatham and itis stated they are meet-

sufficient number can be interested a
factory will be established in the Maple
City.

The birthdays of Mr, George 11.
Ham, of the C. 1'. R., have for many
years past been observed by some
function or other, If it was not a
home -like dinner with a score or so
of close friends, or a public banquet
or a presentation, or en operation
in a hospital,'er a trip on a railway
train, it was something else, Thi'
year a radical departure is being
made from the ordinary August 23rd
proceedings with the Milson Book
Company of Toronto as sponsors for
the innovation, On that day, this
publishing company is issuing "Re
miniseenccs of a Raconteur," the
author of which is Mr. Ilane in
the articles which originally a ear
ed in Maclean's Magazine, the autimi
recalls incidents of his busy and by
no means monotonous life from the
infantile age of three down to the
present day. The allotted three
score and ten of man is most inter
eatingly covered. Prom his early
boyhood days, be recount,: events
