Of late .there has been quite so increase in destruction of property, in many cases through gross carelessness. This is one reason why it is so difficult toper- suade Fire Insurance Comptnies to bring downtheir rates. Are you read- ing the articles being published on the question 1 IP, through stubboruess or whatever else it may be designated, settlement of Irish squabble is not arrived at the fu-. tore may record a sad story. Now is the time to kiss and make 11 up and start out on a new era of blessing and prosperity in the Emerald isle. Could some of the agitators be given a year's outing in an airship Ireland might have great cause of rejoicing. NExT few weeks will be of greet moment to the Westerly Provinces in the completion of their harvesting oper- ations, If lack Frost is kind enough to delay his call for that time it will be a cause of coperatulat'on io many. While crop is not what might he called a "bumper" it will average up fairly well the country over and prove of real value to m t'ty a tiller of the soil. MacKen. zie King's expected visit to Seaforth, Wednesday of next week, to hear this talented Canadian. He will be the chief speaker of the day and his address may have much to do with future events of the coming months. As opportunity is afforded people shoed bear our public men and give attention to their view. point of public affairs and then judge impartially as to the question of leader. ship. For the past few years the politi- cal situation in this Dominion bas been badly mixed up but it is gradually as- suming rte normal coudition. Canada deserves the best government possible. MANY are the devices in carrying on an election contest, some fair and many otherwise. A standing joke for many years was that of 'kissing the baby" to secure the much desired X on the bal- lot, but Eogland is copying from Uocle Sam and lady canvassers are said to be bestowing "essence of two lips" when other arts are not accomplishing the much desired support. It would be a big price in some instances but we sup- pose the fair canvasser has the right to say when and where the "medicine" may be applied. UNLESS railway corporations reduce freight rates something like those of pre-war days it Looks a good deal as if the motor truck will capture a good share of the lighter freights. In the U. S. already motor routes have been established even to live stock transporta- tion, during the time of railway strikes and it proved so satisfactory they did not desert wben the "bo.cars" got back to their regular schedule. This country is getting old enough to throttle at- tempts to collect exorbitant rates in al- most any line and it is a good thing this is the case. "Live and let live" is a good motto. BRUCE Telephone Co, shareholders, by vote at a meeting beld at Paisley, Ontario, decided not to amalgamate with the Bell Co. In Brussels, Grey & Morris Co„ controlling about x,000 tele- phones, instead of being swallowed by the Bell we took over their business and carry on their long distance work in our Central office. 'This method appears to work all right here but it was only done after each Company took in the size of their opponent, Now that prices of labor and material have reached the peak the iedependent phone lines should have a better show if they maintain their Standard of efficiency at medium cost, Creditor is waiting for Hydro, llensall tax rate 82 mills on the >p, Apple and willow trees were uproot- ed by a wind storm at Centralia lo- cality. °ate and barely are light in Zurich neighborhood. 0. The Western Fair London, Ont., Sept. 10th to 17th Queen's Park, Loudon, Ont., is a very busy place these daps in prepara- tion for the big Exhibition to take place in September. OEORGEJACBARKSONROWb,1Ezeautore. 7.9 MABEL, f House for Sale CITIZENS of Ontario—The only salvation for Ontario's revenue-producing forests is the preven- tion of forest fires. Your support and co-opera- tion is absolutely essential. Forest fires are rapidly diminishing our re- sources of timber and pulpwood. Over 90 per cent. of Ontario's forest fires are caused by human carelessness. If everybody was careful to prevent the start of fire, Ontario's Forest* would be safe. l4 Save BUSINESS MEN of Ontario — Lend ns a hand. The various busi- ness associations — of bankers, boards of trade, manufacturers, Merchants, lumbermen, engineers, educationalists, tourists, and sports- men, and all other bodies of weight and influ- ence, can do a great work for this province and for their awn interests as well by actively pro- moting educational propaganda to reduce forest fifes. RAILWAY OFFICIALS can help. Railways cause 40ri of Ontario's Forest fires. The Forestry Branch is being well supported by improved co-operation on the part of railway officials and by the Dominion Railway Board. Let tis reduce the number of railway fires one- half this summer. (The train passenger in Northern Ontario who nonchalantly throws his cigarette or efgar out of the window during the forest fire season is deserving of a jail sen- tence!) CAMPERS, tourists, fishermen, picltnickers, berry pickers, prospectors and hunters should Ontario Forestay Branch Ontario's Forests They're yours feel their responsibility even though out of sight of the policeman. SETTLERS can co-operate by exercising more care in setting out fire on their own pro- perty. LUMBER FIRMS can help by impressing on all foremen the need for carefulness. River - drivers in dry seasons should be specially warned. Gangs of men going in and out to the camps need special attention, because • of the danger along the slash -lined trails from the inevitable cigarette. THE PRESS could do more public-spirited constructive work to reduce forest fires than any other single agency, This is a non-poli- tical campaign in which the whale press could join. LEADERS OF PUBLIC OPINION in every community should be the first to extend a helping hand.
