You cannot be to o careful about fire.
Of late .there has been quite so increase
in destruction of property, in many
cases through gross carelessness. This
is one reason why it is so difficult toper-
suade Fire Insurance Comptnies to
bring downtheir rates. Are you read-

some of the agitators be given a year's
outing in an airship Ireland might have
great cause of rejoicing.

deserves the best government possible.
MANY are the devices in carrying on
an election contest, some fair and many
otherwise. A standing joke for many
years was that of 'kissing the baby" to
secure the much desired X on the bal-
lot, but Eogland is copying from Uocle

UNLESS railway corporations reduce
freight rates something like those of
pre-war days it Looks a good deal as if
the motor truck will capture a good
share of the lighter freights. In the
U. S. already motor routes have been
established even to live stock transporta-
tion, during the time of railway strikes
and it proved so satisfactory they did
not desert wben the "bo.cars" got back
to their regular schedule. This country
is getting old enough to throttle at-
tempts to collect exorbitant rates in al-
most any line and it is a good thing this
is the case. "Live and let live" is a
good motto.
BRUCE Telephone Co, shareholders,
by vote at a meeting beld at Paisley,
Ontario, decided not to amalgamate
with the Bell Co. In Brussels, Grey &
Morris Co„ controlling about x,000 tele-
phones, instead of being swallowed by
the Bell we took over their business and
carry on their long distance work in our
Central office. 'This method appears to
work all right here but it was only done
after each Company took in the size of
their opponent, Now that prices of
labor and material have reached the
peak the iedependent phone lines should
have a better show if they maintain their

Athol McQuarrie, New Editor and
Manager of the Huron Signal
The above photogravure represents
the new Editor of the Goderich Sig-
nal, who assumed command a few
weeks ago. He is the youngest eon of
the late Donald and Mrs, MeQuarrie
of thie locality and is well and favor-
ably known about Brussels. Some
years ago he came to THtf. POST where
he spent his apprenticeship years and
afterward held posts in the West and
was proprietor of the paper at Vic-
toria Harbor, Ont., for a few years.
By these experiences he has had a
very practical acquaintance with all
phases of newspaper work that should
stand hire in good stead in hie new
post in the County town. He has al-
so been interested in church, Sunday
School and Y. M. C. A. work and will
be able to render valuable asaistauce'
in many ways. THE POST will coif -
Unite to be interested in his progress
and we expect he will snake gond and
sustain the fair name of The Signal.
Mrs. McQuatrie was a former Gode-
richite who will no doubt be glad to
be back to the old town.
We are sorry that owing to poor
health, Editor Robertsnn, Bride it nec-
essary to vacate the editorial chair,
which he has filled an ably. If gond
wiahee will hasten his retaru to old
time vigor he shouldsoon be "as fit as
es fiddle." We wish the Signal pros-
perity under its new management.
Mrs. Robert Oliver and Mrs. Thom-
as Brown, of Brussels, and Chas, Me-
Quarrie, Grey township, are sisters
and brother to Mr. McQuarrie.

CITIZENS of Ontario—The only salvation for
Ontario's revenue-producing forests is the preven-
tion of forest fires. Your support and co-opera-
tion is absolutely essential.
Forest fires are rapidly diminishing our re-
sources of timber and pulpwood. Over 90 per cent.
of Ontario's forest fires are caused by human
carelessness.
If everybody was careful to prevent the start
of fire, Ontario's Forest* would be safe.

BUSINESS MEN of

ness associations —

Merchants, lumbermen,
engineers, educationalists, tourists, and sports-
men, and all other bodies of weight and influ-
ence, can do a great work for this province and
for their awn interests as well by actively pro-
moting educational propaganda to reduce forest
fifes.
RAILWAY OFFICIALS can help. Railways
cause 40ri of Ontario's Forest fires. The
Forestry Branch is being well supported by
improved co-operation on the part of railway
officials and by the Dominion Railway Board.
Let tis reduce the number of railway fires one-
half this summer. (The train passenger in
Northern Ontario who nonchalantly throws his
cigarette or efgar out of the window during the
forest fire season is deserving of a jail sen-
tence!)

SETTLERS can co-operate by exercising
more care in setting out fire on their own pro-
perty.
LUMBER FIRMS can help by impressing on
all foremen the need for carefulness. River -
drivers in dry seasons should be specially
warned. Gangs of men going in and out to
the camps need special attention, because • of
the danger along the slash -lined trails from
the inevitable cigarette.
THE PRESS could do more public-spirited
constructive work to reduce forest fires than
any other single agency, This is a non-poli-
