TRUNMBULL• (salter of Tho Sunday School TIMES) JESUS AND THE SICK Sunday, San. 8 ---Mark 1:21-15... Golden Text Ile hath clone all things well He ,uakcth .loth the deaf to 1030r and the rhumb to speak, (Mark 7::17.) Sin and its work crumpled, brake, dieeepeared-before Virtu who is e(00 - eel Righteousness, That is the mcs- 00tto of this lesson, Sickness is 11 reult of sin; when Christ t pears end manifests His power, "sickness must disappear. The lesson is a thrilling story of tele; n story that is not fiction, but literal, historical. fact. The narrative has the swift ac- tion that c• iraalacter•izes Mark's Gos- pel throughout. The typical word "straightway" introduces the lesson events; this is followed, in the score of verses, by the words "immediate- ly," forthwith, "immediately," "immediately." The Lorcl Jesus Christ, eternally the Son of God, Saviour of men, the King of Lsrael and King of kings, the One who is to conte again and wrest the Kingdoms of this world from the usurping god of Chie world (Satan). and who eventually will create a new heaven and a new earth and at whose name every knee shall some day bow, of those in Heaven, and those in earth, and those under the earth—this One who is both God and Man, one Sabbath day stepped in to a synagogue in a busy town on the shores of Galilee, and taught. The people did not know who He was. Soon they began to realize that they were listening to such teaching as they had never heard before. They had heard learned scribes teach punctuating their teaching with cita- tions from this and that human au- thority. This man was ,different. His listeners "were aetoni_hed at. ,Tis teachings: for He taught them[ as one that had authority, and not as the scribes." It was God speaking to men; God does not need "authori- ties." The teaching was interrupted. There was a person in the meeting who was more powerful than any man or woman in the congregation. This person was "an unclean spirit," a demon, a fallen angel, a servant of Satan. He was in possession of the body of a mean—of body and mind. Using the possessed man's tongue, he cried out in piotc t against til: Lord Jesus Christ 'LM atom." ]Ie.. said 11e ]anew who this Jesus of Naz- areth Was, ',he Holy One of (loll." Ile aekrd if He had "0111015 to 11'strey lie?" It was a duel bete. eon Satan 011(1 -Christ, the 0trpernate al powers of it w•iti'i the supernatural Power of hightenu_neee. The demon -possess- ed man was helpless, The congrega- tion was ;helpless, But Christ was greater than the demon, Is greater than Satan and all his vast army of evil-piri,!s. They are more powerful than men; but Christ is omnipotent. "And Jesus rebuked hila, say nig, hold thy Hoare and come out o1' him," The spirit tore the ratan, but had to obey; he gave up his possession of a human body and came out. It was une0n -ditional complete victory for Chri t and righteousness against 'Satan and 511. Just such eel'criences have been repeated in cases of well -attested demon possession in modern three, especially in heathen 100110, like China whore Satan has almost full sway. Prayer in the none of Christ has cast out such `lemons, in antici- pation of the day when all sin and evil spirits will be cast out forever by the Son of God. Again 'the people were amazed, wondering and questioning. They saw a new thing; the authority with which this Man taught was exercised over unclean spirits, who ]lad to obey Him. Countle s victories over sickness, a consequence of sin, followed, If sin had never come into the world there would have been neither sick- ness nor death. This is not to say that every experience of bodily sick- ness ie a direct result of some sin in the life of the one who is sick. Our Lord answered that question for Iii1 disciples (John 9:1-3). But sick- ness is always at least an indirect result of sin in the human race: often it is the direct result of some individual sin, as physicians know only too well. And the Lord Jesus Christ filled that Sabbath clay with demonstra- tions of His power over sickness. He had taught with authority. He had cast out an evil spirit with authority, now by 'that same omnipotent au- thority He cast out bodily disease.
