All is not gold that glitters and we
predict that many a boy who turned

those who were "weighed" in fast

Miss C. Macdonald
Is Now in Canada
Daughter of the late Dr. Meter Mc-

From the rapidly increasing and
quickly broadening field of he so-

Miss Caroline Macdonald has arrived
in London to speed a brief noli¢lay, a
guest for the Christmas season with
her mother, Mrs. Peter Macdonald, 4n
South London.
"I've never had time to develop a
method of work," said bliss McDon-

many cases to be handled seem to
just flop down on my doorsteps and I
go right at them, doing the job that
lies nearest. without reference to any
particular method.'
If all lack of method resulted as
Miss Macdonald's is doing, the sys-
tem would be worth general adoption.
Working under a board of influential
Japanese citizens, the Canadian wo-

Factory Night School. '
A recent most interesting develon-
ment, which has received Government
recognition, -is the establishmeut of
a night school for factory gii''- in the

of 23 is the head of the school, and
teachers from cit day schools give
volunteer services in a comae of
study that is the equivalent of first

Fires Have Taken 120
Little Lives This Year
The fire at Ho= -pica, Saint
Charles, in Quebec, last Wednesday
night, is the third disaster to take
toll of numerous young lives in Can-
ada this year, bringing the number
of children victims to about 120 or
more.
The other two were the fire and
panic at the Laurier Theatre, Mon-
treal, January 9, when 78 were
killed, and the orphanage fire at
Lae La Flonge, Sask., September
19, when twenty children were
burned to death.
Other fires in Canada this year
claimed. upwards of forty victims.

Rumors Are That Sinclair May Lead
Two Parties Then
i./
Premier Ferguson announced yes-
terday that the Ontario Legislature
would meet on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
The House will likely assemble
with at least one vacant seat, for
there appears to be no inclination on 1
the part of the Government at the
present time to plunge the vacant
South Bruce Riding into a winter
by-election. If Hon. Dr. Leeming
Carr, Minister without portfolio, and
member for East Hamilton, quite his
post as foreasted, for the office of
Sheriff of Wentworth County, there
will be two vacant seats.
One More Supporter.
On the present face of things, Pre-
mier Ferguson will have one more

On the other hand, says the Tor-

the House may be of a more formid-
able nature than has been expected.
There is a persistent rumor in cer-
tain political quarters that before
Parliament convenes the Liberals
and Progressives will present a un-
ited front under the leadership of
William F. N. Sinclair. • Undoubted-
ly there was some movement toward
thi: objective a year ago. That
movement, it i0• now learned, has
not waned to any extent, in spite of
the fact that J. G. Lethbridge, mem-

a strong belief in the need of fernh-

Hon, W. L. Raney, as Leader of the
Progressive group,

been during the past season, the

would eventually be taken over.
Oswald Ginn, inspector under the
Corn Borers Act, also nrrde an oral
report. He told of the ravages of
the borers in other counties to which
he had gone to obeerve the methods
of dealing with the: pest. Much edu-
cational work had been done by the
-distribution of literature; but owing
to weather conditions and other cir-
cumstances great difficulty was ex-
perienced in the carrying out of
precautionary measures. The worm
worked from within and for this rea-
son spraying was not effective.
A communication was received
from the city of London requesting
the co-operation of this county in
raising an endowment fund of 12,-
000,000 for Western University. This
was filed.
G. R. Paterson, agricultural repre-
sentative, addressed the council re-
garding the work under his charge.
He strongly recommended spraying
for fruit production. To get young
people interested in faun work he
advocated young people's clubs,
judging contests, and school fairs.
Fifteen of the nineteen schaol fairs
in the county did well this year and
improved their exhibits very consid-
erably. If school pupils were not
honest in their exhibits, he remarked,
it was up to the parents.
In reply to an inquiry the clerk
stated that the cost of the county
equalization was $3,026, the amount
not including the cost of the special
session.

In amendment it was moved by
