War between Crown and Parliament,

11.1l execution of 'Charles 1, Monk was
given command of the Irish troops
sent to England to fight for the king,
but in 1644 he was taken prisoner
at, Nantwich, and for the next •two
years he was confined in the Tower
of London. He secured his freedom
by accepting from Parliament a con1-
miscion in the army operating against
lihc Irish rebels, an ace which was
regarded by the Royalists as a very
different matter to taking up arnis
,against the king.
He served ho Ireland for three
years, and then joined Cromwell in
his memorable campaign in Scotland.
He commanded a brigade at the Bat-
tle of Dunbar, and when Cromwell
returned to England Monk was plac-
o3' in charge of the Parliamentary
army in Scotland. In 1652 he left
the field for the sea, and in the role
of admiral of the fleet he added to
his laurels by a serious of brilliant

he finally arrived in London on the

a great fumy and was the virtual tual dic-
ta%or of the country. He dismissed
the existing Parliament and sum-
moned a new assembly, which, on the
itst. May, vbted for the recall of
Charles II.
It was mainly due C•1) his wonderful
patience and diplomacy that the
drastic change of government was
effected without. bloodshed, and he
was showered with honors by the
new king, who made him Duke of
Albemarle, a Knight of the Garter
and Commander-in-chief of the army.
His clays of active service came to
an end at the Restoration of the Mon-
archy, but the frequent raids of the
Dutch on the Eng'li'sh coast afforded
him several opportunities o1' serving
his country on the sea: During the
days of the Great Plague which de-

remaining at his post when the Court
and Parliament fled, and in the fol-
