PEAS AND OATS IN COMBINATION FOR C,'RAIN The doubtfulness of the relative value of mixtures of peas and oats induced the Cap -Rouge Experimental Station to conduct an experiment to find out if these mixture, would give better yields of grain than when each was grown separately. Rann;r oats and Arthur peas are at present the leaders for yield in their resn('c- tive classes and have matured within one day of each other, according to eleven years' test, which makes them an ideal combination. There would also probably be more differ- ence in their food requirements and in the places at which they talc• l' food, than with most other combin- ations of ordinary grains. During the same four sea: ono, a mixture of Arthur peas and Banner oats w•.: ( 001111 4i with Acthar pert; alone, and the ,.sults int:e -*own that t:;, ,4,i au' e do, : not i ;endue. e LIS nmt'h :IS ell Ina. of the com7.an'nta alone, the average :n . nn 1,1 grain per :core being for Arthur 1807 u , tl1• peas and llrttmer oat:. 212'1 for Ar- thur peas alone and 211 i for Banner oats atlone. However, we freely admit at this Station that if a nliture is grown in central Quebec for .grain produc- tion, peas and oats, using vat i,'tit' wht:';i will stature nearly at the oq•m• time, must be used of account of the comparatively high percents_'•. of protein, the most costly part of the ration also of their profitable use for soiling, for hay, for green fhd;ler or for ensilage, as desired. CANADA'S NORTHLAND That the industrial areas of Can- ada are not confined to the large cities nor to the southern and first settled sections is strikingly illus- trated in a new Wrap just i.ssned by the Natural Resources Intelligence Service of the Department of the Interior of Ottawa. This is called "an economic map of Central Canada featuring transportation and com- mercial development." By "Central" Canada in gthe instance is meant - roughly that district lying be- tween Montreal and Winnipeg and north of a line connecting Ottawa with Fort William. The tremendous in- crease in the value of purchases mncle by Canadians from their rich south ton neighbor is attrilbuterl to the greater prosperity of the peo•91e of this country. It is taken as a sign of .Canada's development— "Cana- dian business has bean healthy and is still climbing," Expansion th:'re has undoubtedly been, and the splendid grain crops this year will mean still further prosperity for fartners end business Wren in general; but thought- ful Canadians are not able to en- thuse over the statistics presented 1`11 the degree possible in the United States. The fact that Canada is "now buyingabout two-thirds of all her foreign goods in the market; of the United States" is naturally a subject of rejoicing on the part of our good neighbors. But how much arc the citizens of the United States buying from us? What is the state of the trade 'balance? "Lens's year we bought more goods in Canada than in any other one foreign coun- try,' says the Stn, "the totoi ning sell up toward half a billion of dollars." During that year. hna'evet Canada bought about $0110,000,000 worth of United S'ates' 'rnnA:. en 1 the total will be considerably larger -this year. The unsatisfactory thing about the trading is that so mn'11 of our raw material goes to foe United States, to be resold to us as finished rodu p ts. c No one will regret that Canaria and the United States should b' on such good business terms with each other. It is natural that a very large" vol- ume of trade should Mass between the two countries, but there are un- doubtedly features about this ex- change which could be improved up- on. It its reported thug: nn 1,,ss, their $22,000,000 was spent by C'anadia'n, on automobiles imported from the United States- What we n': in re- turn for their Iltanufactur,,,1 articles were our grain, lumber, nolo (•10,1. 1'.0.
