With the outir+ak of war with
Franca, in 1703 he entered upon the
busiest and most glorious period of
his career, and fol• ;even year's he
was almost continuously engaged on
active service. His right eye was
destroyed at the taking of Corsica
in 1794, and three years later he
lost an arm front wounds received
during an attack on Santa Cruz. He
served under Admiral Jervis at the
famous battle of St. Vincent on the
14th February, 1797, when public
became aware for the first time of
his great ,genius and daring, which
had hitherto been little known out-
side naval circles.
At the commencement of 1788, at
the early age of 40, he was promoted
to the rank of rear -admiral, and on
the 1st. August of that year he per-
formed the most notable achieve-
ment of his career at the Battle of
the Nile, when his destruction of the
French fleet gave Britain the com-
mand of the Mediterranean Sea and
put an end to Napoleon's carefully -
laid plans for the conquest of India.
This great victory gained him his

It is estimated by the Forest Ser-
vice that the only economic use for
three-eighths of the land area of
Canada lies in the growing of trees.
This vast area of territory, while in-
capable of successful agricultural
production, is, if permanently de-
dicated, protected, and managed,
suited to the, production of a timber
crop which would guarantee for all
time the supply of raw material for
Canada's wood -using industries.
