The former lets the child know that

appeal to two of the many aspects of
a child's nature --adventure and in-
dependence, A variation, in fact, of
the truth that forbidden fruit is
sweetest.
"Don't spill it!" says a mother to
a child carrying a cup of water or
milk. Wrong! She should have said,
"Carry it carefully." The negative
suggests "spilling"; the positive sug-
gests "care," In a little experiment
I suggested some time ago the out-
come was that the child told not to
spill brought off several spillings; the
child told to carry carefully spilt
nothing.
Another experiment revealed that
of two children, the One teho was
told, "Don't fidget," developed fidget-
inu, tinct the other, told to "Sit still,"
did so. Health;' children leave a nat-
ural nau.1hliness, and that, as a rule,

walk in a certain direction in a T-

The apparatus was provided with
electric wires with which to punish
the snail If it went to the left arm

light was then turned on to rouse the
snail to activity, and the time take"
for it to reach the end of the right
arm was noted with a stop watch.
The time taken atfirst varied con-

in one case, After Ian first seven-

the longest time taken was less than
500 seconds, many of the recorded
times being between 200 and 300 no.
