Our Canadian protectionists have

other aide of the question. it would
appear that they had never read the
standard text books, They diseuee
every queetinn brought before the
Board from a purely theoretical

the problem has never been called to
their attention. Let us co112111 )' the
two main arguments ---and they ap-

assertion that we cannot compote
with other countries, because oar
wages are much higher. Now surely
it would appear to everybody that we
are competing. Canada' a exports are:
greater than her imports. Nominal
wagon bear small relationship to total

Canada. The w 1 r'es of farm hands 'n
Western Canada are probably the
highest wages paid to farm lahoar in
any part of the world. Yet Western
Canada is able to produce wheat more
cheaply than competing -countries.

Again I nugget to my friends of se„esee, -,
til. Manufacturers' Association that
cola facia ought to be faced, Once
o' twice there has come before the
710'll'd a naive ingenious soul who told
history frankly and clearly, He
wanted a higher price for his pro-
duct. He wanted a permit from the
Government to charge other people a
higher pricer. He made no bones a-
bout it. The statement had all the
guileless innocence of the five year
old who 1001(5 Up into your face and
says ':Daddy get me a car like that."
Ono can understand such a statment
—We human. My sympathy ;foes out
to such an applicant, but alas how
112(2 ]s such a story; Instead we have
the intense narrowness which looks
only at one side, Sometimes the
smallness or the application, the 1)etti-
10.1 of it is far beyond the power of
word: to describe. At a recent sitt-
ing there was an application from
oittht of the largest paper mill; in
Canada 141121013 for ayuty on ?ser
twine coming into this country. The
combined capital of the applicant„
must have run somewhere between
twenty-five and fifty million dollars.
The importations of paper twine a-
mount to approximately :$6,001) and
they wanted to check tens Import by
a tariff, Don't you think they should
hew Stayed at }some. Could you con-
ceive of anything more trifling and
picayune and small? Is it by such
thiuge ae this the Nation grows? Has
big bu.iness nothing else to do than
chase a trifle of this 16n(1? There
ought to be a touch of reason in tho
applicants for trader protection.

cLAUGI-ILIN-BUICK enjoys the
P
largest measure of public confid-
ence and popular acceptance ever accord-
ed any fine car because McLaughlin -
Buick represents the safest investment,.
the firmest security and the highest
return.
The buyer of a McLaughlin -Buick con-
sciously invests his money in more miles
of transportation, in greater comfort and
luxury, in more satisfying performance,
in absolute dependability.
Such phenomenal advances as the Mc-
Laughlin - Buick Engine, Vibrationless
beyond belief Torque Tube Drive —
Mechanical Four -Wheel Brakes—Sealed
Chassis—Vacuum-cleaned Crankcase—
are evidences of the firm determination
to keep McLaughlin -Buick always the
standard by which automobile invest-
ment values are judged.
Those who regard 'a car from an investment
standpoint should first consider McLaughlin -
Buick, not merely its quality and beauty today,
but its lasting dividends of undiminished
satisfaction. MF -03113
