Birth of Wellington
One 'hundred and fifty eight years
ago, on the 1st May 17 p, the Il'on-
orabltl Arthur Wellesley, afterwards
the Duke of Wellington and one of
the
tri figures iia
the meet illustrious o
history of the British army, was born
at Dangan Castle in Ireland, the
residence of his father, the Earl of
Morn ing'ton.
He was educated at Eton College
and the French Military School at
Angers, At the age of 18 he enter-
ed the British army as an ensign in
the 73r(1 Highlanders, and :foul
years later a lieutenant-colonel2y
W118 bought for him by his elder
Mother. He had his first experience
of active service under the Duke of
York during the War with Holland
in 1794, and two years later he went
with his regiment to India, where he
remained until 1805 and gained
great distinction, not only as a mili-
tary lacier but as a cuplomat and a
statesman.
On the outbreak of the lengthy
struggle with Napoleon Bonaparte
known as the Peninsular War he Wa,
given the command of a division, and
during the next five years he esta-
blished 'his military renown by the
brilliant campaign which he waged
against the French armies in Spain
and Portugal, and which culminated
in his great victory at Vittoria in
181.3 and led to the deposition and
exile of Napoleon a year later, Well-
ington was raised to tee peerage and
given the sum of two hunched thou-
sand pounds by the Britfslt Govern-
ment as a reward for his successor
in the early days ,of the campaign,
and at its conclusion he was elevates.
to a dukedom and given a blithe
sum of four hundred thousand
pounds,
Napoleon escaped from the island
I of Elba in March 1815 and once
again menaced the peace of the
world, but three months later his
power and ambitious schemes were
finally crus1291 by Wellington's mem-
orable victory at Waterloo. This
\vas Wellington's last appearance on
the battlefield, and for the next few
years he was actively engt;e.(1 in the
administrative duties of the army of
1 recotstruc-
occupatiot in France, the ,
tion of the European mltttary fron-
tiers and the adjustment of indenl-
nities,
On his return to England he en-
tered the political arena, and for the
neat quarter of a century he was
one of the great outstanding states
111en of the day. He held many im-
portant posts in the Cabinet and was
for a short time prime minister, dur-
ing which tirne he was responsible
for the emancipation of the Roman
Catholics. -
1 -le enjoyed the confidence and af-
fection of the people for a longer
period than ally other man in British
history, and for nearly fifty yeah, he
was the idol of the nation, except
for one brief period when his opposi-
tion to the famous Reform Bill in-
curred the temporary displeasure of
the people. He remained a domin-
ant factor in public life until 1840,
when he retired, but a couple of
years later he was called upon to or-
ganize the military arrangements in
London during the trouale with the
Chartists, and until the end of his
life his advice was nought and fol-
lowed in time of difficulty,
At the age 'of 88 he passed peace-
fully away at Weimer Castle, his of-
ficial residence as Lord Wardell of
I the Cinque Ports, and was laid to
