Death of Charles Darwin
Forty-five years ago, on the 19tH
April. 1882 Charles Robert Darwin,
the e('lebrl:ted naturalist :lad author
of "The Origin of Sp..ci';s," died at
the age of 73.
Booth of his grandfather; wen dis-

the on of Dr. Erasmus Darwin, the
eminent scientist and poet, while his
mother was a daughter of Joa:nh
Wedgwood, the most famous. of Brit-
ish pottery nlanufactuaers. Derwin
was born in the town of Shrewsbury,

cation nt local schools. It w34 first
intended that he should f )1l.,w his
father's profession, and at the ace of
144 he was sent to Ldinburgh tc

ferred to Cambridge University,
where he graduated in 1581.
While at the tniversity he made Il
profound study of zoology nod geo-
logy, and this led to his eecurin•„ an

England at the end of 1831 on a
surveying expedition. The voyage
lasted for five years, during which
the ship visited South America, Aus-
tralaisa and numerous Wand.; in the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and
