United Church Last Sunday afternoon an interest- ing Teinperance program was pre- sented in the United Church Sunday School. It began with a short talk by Bert Lott," Grapes vs. Wine." Grapes or grape juice contain 80% water and 20% food value; but when allowed to ferment for wine, these same lucious grapes lose 2% of their water, and nearly all their food value is changed into alcohol, which is a poison. IVIany other fruits may likewise be used to destroy instead of to build up life, by permitting them to ferment. Indeed alcokee is found nowhere in nature excepting in decay hag fruits and grains. Following this item were two splendid readings: the first by Miss Evelyn Chapman showed how the habit of tippling, contracted during college days, ended In the ruin of a most promising career and the blighting of a young wife's hap- piness; the second by Mrs. S. H. Jaekson, illustrated the fiendish pas- sion of drink, by showing that while under its influence, a man may take the life of his OWN child. Oarl Ames is enending a week at the home a J. and Mts.
