FIVE WILL FACE
GODERICH TRIAL
-----
Alleged Garage Looters Are Taken
Feom City—Accused All London
Men—One Said to Confess; Others
to Fight Charges
---
(Saturday's Free Prase)
Provincial_ Constable Albert White-
eides, Lieenee Inspector W. T. Pel -
low and Deputy Sheriff Thomas Gun-
dry, all of Huron County, visited
London yesterday and escorted to
Goderieh five men whom detectives
arrested here Thursday in connection
with burglaries of garages in Hay-
field, Drucefield and Varna and the
theft of automobile tires and money.
The prisoners, all Londoners, were
Bruns Laver, Gordon Harvey, Robt.
Davis and Ronidd Rodda, They were
taken lido custody by detectivea
Thomas Bolton, Elmor Walsh and
Harry Down. Police say the quintet
confessed to participation in the rob-
beries, except Davis, who is said to
have remained in an automobile out-
side the garages while the others
entered.
The loot rc,covered with the arrests
included 10 automobile tires, a num-
ber of tubes, batteries and a quan-
tity of candy. The cash alleged to
have been stolen amounted to ap-
proximately $70, The combined
value of all of the loot is estimated
at about $250.
The robberies were committed
early last Sunday morning. The men
bet the city late on Saturday night
in a car said to be owned by one ef
the Harvey brothers. police here
were notified of the thefts through
the general notification broadcast
over the province by Huron County
authorities.
Confesses Guilt
An attempt, police say, one of the
Harvey brothers. made to dispose of
two of the tires here at a price which
created suspicion led to the arrest
and the recovery of the loot, When
Harvey was questioned about the
tires he confessed to participation in
the robberies and implicated the
- others. All five were taken into cus-
tody at their respective places of em-
ployment and in their working
clothes.
Provincial Constable Whitesides
was notified of the arras of the men
late on Thursday, by detectives here,
as a result of which he and his as-
sociates came to London to escort
the prisoners back to face trial.
Constable Whitesides returned to
Goderich in an autornobge loaned
with the loot, and with one- of the
men, while Inspector Pellow and
Deputy Sheriff Gundry travelled by
train with the other ,four. J. M. Mc-
Evoy, K.C., has been retained in the
defense of Laver and Davie, and J.
M. Donahue will defend Rodda.
Davie told police he was at a dance
last Saturday night and that the oth-
er men called for him. He declared
he did not know where he was going
until the party had driven several
miles into the country. He denied
that he had participated in the rob-
beries and said he remained waiting
outside in the automobile in which
the five drove.
Get Jail Terms
Goderich, May 17. --.Appearing at
noon to -day, in Huron tllounty police
court, the five young Londoners
pleaded, guilty to garage thefts, and
were sentenced to terms of from two
to twelve months in jail on charges
of burglary.
The accused, Laver, Rodda, Davie
and two Harvey brothers, who were
charged with burglarizing garages in
Hayfield, Brucefield and Varna, were
defended by J. M. McEvoy, K.C., of
London, who entered a plea of guilty
for the defendants. Several promin-
ent Londoners gave testimony as to
character of the young men, and al-
though one other case of burglary
was said to be charged against this
gang, they had no previous police re-
cord.
