Last Thursday the Storm King let
loose and we had a western blizzard
with every kind of variations. Busi-

ing Wm. Gibson, of Hamilton, (1023
Champion) in the finals with a score
of 2 to 0, and a draw. Mr. Irwiht
was the favorite and is a very popular
checkerist.• He is Canadian match
champion, which he won in snatch
with Rev. W. S, Edgar, of Peterbore,

the House at Ottawa last Thursday
afternoon, T. L. Church, North Tor-

the crhninal code to exclude front the
clscss of common gaming houses, any

are played for patriotic or charitable

Pitched a Spectacular Game.
Prom "The Varsity", the Under-
graduate newspaper of the Universiay
of Toronto of January 21st, we take
the following which refers to the soft
ball pitcher of the Brussels team, Miss
Doris ri3g, who is attending Varsity:
The second game in the play-off be-
tween U. 0.„ and Vic in the women's
interfaculty baseball resulted in a
score of 10-9 in favour of U. C. The
game opened with Vic batting and at
the end of the first innings the score
was 4-0 in favour of Vic. U. C. woke
up in the second innings and at the
end of the third the score stood 5
all. From then the play was close,
until in the shah innings Vie trained
the lead, with the score to6. J. C.
scored two runs in the seventh and
the score was tied again in the last
innings, an extra innings resulting
in a 10-9 score in favour Of U. C.
Doris Ross pitched a spectacular
game for U. C. Lorene Gibson and
Francis Service starred for Vic.
Passed Away.
On Saturday evening Mary Robert-
son, beloved wife of Allan Speir,
Flora street, passed away quietly, at
the age of 68 years, 10 months and
9 days.. Mrs. Speir was the second
eldest daughter of the late Alex Rob-
ertson and Ann Reid of East Wawa -
posh, end was born in Nassagawa
Township, near Milton and with the
family moved to Wawanosh Town-
ship. 49 years ago last December
she was married to her now bereft
partner in life and they moved to the
4th line of Morris where they resided
until 2 years ago when they sold the
farm to their son, Will, and moved
to Brussels. Besides her husband she
leaves to mourn her departure 5
sons and five daughters, namely

Mrs. W. Bowman, Morris; Mrs. D.
Denhohn, Blyth; Elsk, at ho -me; Mrs.
jno. Work, Grey; Mrs. Gordon Walsh
of Morris; Gilbert of Morris; Alex.,
Cabri, Sask.; William and Norman in
Morris arid Allan at home. (Mr). H.
Duncan and an infant son deceased.)
The late Mrs. Speir was afine Christ-
ian woman, who in the long years a
resident in Morris'was a kind and
helpful neighbor. She was a member
of Melville Presbyterian church. Sur-
viving -sisters and brothers of the de-
ceased are:—Mrs. Only, Californis;
Mrs, Brisco, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs.
Jim. Menzies, Wawannsh; Adam
Robertson, Wawanosh; George and
William of Wingham; James in Seat-
tle. The funeral is being held this
afternoon and service is being held
in Melville church, Rev. Mr. &Mier
and Rev. Mr. Barker, conducting the
services. The pallbearers. are, Gil-
bert, Norman, William and Allan,
sons, and jno.. Bowman and James
Duncan, grandsons. Interment will
he ;natio in Brussels cemetery. The
bereaved have the sympathy of the
community in the loss of wife and
mother.
Obituary.
The death tool: place at his homer at
435 Sinicoe Street, Winnipeg, .on
Satneday, January 16th, of R. K.
Cousley, son of the late John
Cousley, of Brussels. Death was
Ib' resnit of a prolonged illness
caused ho Stemach Flue and Pneu-
monia. The deceased had recovered
from the first attaeks of the diaease
hut guttered a relapse on the Thurs-
day prior to his death whichcame as
O severe shock to Ins family and their
many friends. The deceased was in
his 47th year,. having been born in
Megherafelt, Co., Derry, Ireland, in
1879. With his parents and other
members of the family he Callle to thio
Country in 1880, and located at Brus
'sets. Ontario. Mr. Cousley has Ve-
in Winnipeg for the past twenty
years and is Survived by his sorrew-
ing wi-low and a family of three chil-
dren, Margaret, Aileen and Aruold,
The :funeral was held on Wedrtearlay
January 20th, frosn Clarke-Lea-
therriale Funeral Homo, interment
being.made in the Kildonan Cemetery.
