Re-elected Mayor of Rossland.
Last Thursday, Jan. 14th, Alexan-
der W. Smith was re-elected Mayor
of Roseland, B.C., by a majority of
74 over his opponent. Mr. Smith is
an old timer in municipal affairs in
that city. His old friends in town :sae
glad to hear of his success once
more. The Mayor is a brother of
William Campbell Smith of town.

Hyatt United, formerly Methodist,
W. M. S., London, is celebrating its
twenty-fifth anniversary and the
Free Press in reporting the affair last
week ran a portrait of Mrs. S. J. Al -
lin, who was the Society's first paeai-
dent. Mrs. AIim, wife of the Rev. S.
J. Allis, is well known here, having
been an indefatigable church and
community worker during her bus -
band's pastorate at the Methodist
church.
Executive Met in Wingham.
A meeting' was held in Wingham
last- week of the Presbyterial Execu-
tive of the Women's Missionary Soc-
iety. The annual reports were re-
ceived and arrangements made for
the annual meeting of the Maitland
Presbyterial which will be held,. in
Melville Church, Brussels, on Tues-
day, May 18th, Mrs. Alex. Stream's
attended the meeting and was the
guest.. of Rev. (Dr.) and Mrs. Per-
rie while in Wingham.
Asked for Reduction of Rates.
Stock shippers sormed a delegation
turd met the Dominion Railway Com-
mission at Toronto last Thursday and
asked for a 25 per cent, reduction in
tIm freight rates on feeder cattle go-
ing to country points from the cen-
tral markets �f Toronto and Mon-
treal. They also asked to have the
minimum of 20,0000 lbs. in a mixed
car of stock lowered to 17,000 1htia
which would give shippers the priv-
ilege of loading from 1 to 5 cattle
in a hog car without raising the
freight rates. The Commission pro

Last Saturday afternoon the "0"
or 'Young Women's Christian Tem-
perance Union met al; the home of
Louise Rose. In spite of the stormy
weather the meeting was a very good
one, and promised well for futuro
work. While it is understood shat
this is a Temperance Association ana
the idea of temperance will always
be kept foremost, we are adopting in
our meetings parts of the program of
the Canadian Girls in Training Or-
ganization, The next meeting will
be held at the home of Ina Cunning-
ham, and a snow -shoe tramp and soc-
ial time are being arranged for after
the regular meeting. All "teen"
ago girla are welcome. Please note
that the •meetings are to be held the
third Saturday of every month at

Rubber Pinch.
London, Jan. 21.—"The Lion With
the Rubber, Tail' is the title of a
cartoon and fable published in Punch
by way of criticism of Secretary
Hoover's rubber policy.
The cartoon, which is by S. R.
Bernard Partridge, depicts the British
lion sitting unmoved while the Am-
erican eagle is biting and clawing
at its tail, which is Made of rubber.
The fable reads:
There was once an eagle who was
used to having the best of everything.
And it chanced that he met a lion
with a tail of rubber. And great
envy overtook the eagle because the

"And the eagle said: "1 will see
how this lion likes to have bis tail
twisted.'
