The Post Letter Box To the Editor of The Post, Dear Sir: In a recent issue of The Post there appeared the Financial State- ment of the Village of Brussels for the year 1925; in it was a statement of the receipts arid expenditures from January 1st to November 303.31. 1925 of the Hydro -Electric System. The total of receipts was $11,$ 12.0 0, and the total expenditures, $1 0,9 0 2.0 0. In the receipts was an item of 95,520 for street lighting for sixteen months. Now this item would indicate that the Village had not paid its lighting for 1 9 2 4 until sonie thee. in 1925. The difference between income and ex- penditure showed a balance on hand of $40 0,0 9 and this sum was proudly referred to as a surplus, on the even- ing of the nomination meeting. I notiee in looking over the ex- penditures that September is the last month on which payment has been made to the Hydro -Electric Commis- sion, and as this statement purposes to show all business up to November Oth, it is quite evident there is no i surplus as the system is owing the Hydro -Commission for two month's current, The Hydro -Commission's charges have averaged for the first nine months of 1 9 2 6, something over $530 a month; thie would make $1,160 for two months, with only $40 9.0 9 with which to pay the bill; yet this is par- aded as a surplus. I also notice that the Finaneial Statement for 1 924 shows a balance left over fi'oni the sale of twenty -en' ' thousand Hydro bonds of $6 33 69. It also shows a balance of 33174.51 from ! the service account. reeking a total on hand of $8 1 3.20. I notice this ' amount has not been brought for -1 ward to the 1 925 account. Now, where is this amount? Doubt- less the Treasurer's books will show, but there is nothing in the 3025 statement that would accurately point to its location; though there is one, item there that might give a lead to its loeation. On totalling. the receipts and ex- nenditures for the two years, I find the account short by this exact nmount, $81 3.2 0. Now, sir, surely the ratepeyers,' and those of your readers who care to perase the finan- end stetement are entitled to a more intelligible one then that appearing In a recent issue of The Post, Brussels, Sammy 1W9 W.
