Huron Co, Council Enjoy a Pic-nic at Hayfield At the June meeting of the Huron County Council it was suggested that the Council hold a picnic. at Bay- field this year. Accor dingly a majori- ty of the members of the Council, with their families :and many ftaeuds, met at Jowett'srove, Bayfield, on Friday, June lath, aid had a right good tithe it. the old-fashioned pie-nic style. The weather was ideal and the day one of June's best, and all present en- joyed it to the fullest, Besides most of the present mem- bers of the Council several members of previous Councils were present, in. eluding ex -Wardens Goveplcok, M. P. P., Centelon and Elliott and J. A, Ford, W. H. Lobb and A. E. Irwin, also Councillor Majnr Dunlop, W, Walker and Town Clerk Knox, God- erich. A game of Baseball between sides chosen by Messrs. -Douglas and M. Elliott, was well rnntested, and brilliant plays were pulled off. When the batters did find the ball the picnic grounds were hat die, big enough, A. E. Irwin, ex- peeve, Bayfield, pitched for both sides and the way he twirled the sphere would do credit to a pro- fessional, putting the majority out in one -two -three order no strikes, He was ably supported by Harold Wes- ton, win did the honors of catcher for both sides. The score was a tie, 0 each. County Treasurer Lane umpir- ed the game and gave some very close decisions, In feet there is some talk of his services being sought for by some of the big leagues, Another exciting feature of the day was a tug-of-war between sides chosen by Messrs. Neeb, Reeve of Stephen, and McNabb, Reeve of Grey. After 2 very strenuous pulls the Stephen tnember's side was delayed victorious, Jas. A, Ford acted as referee with satisfaction. Then followed a series of races and jumping contests, conducted by ex- ar a W. Ii Elliott in which the SV de , athletic abtlitiee of the members were further to ted Morton Elliott Reeve of Stanley, having won the greater number of events was declared the champion athlete of the Council, (i members of the Council were very inuolr missed, These were Messrs, Beavers, Outt, Clark, Moffatt, Plum and Pur•dou, two of whom, Messts, Outt and Clark, were absent through illness. The ladies, too, took part in the sports and some doge races were sewn. A very pleasing' feature of the day's proceedings teas the presentation to Comte, Clerk Holman of an address, accompanied by two handsome up• holstered choirs, Address was retad by Councillor Amos Tipling of Wing - ham. blr, Holman was taken comms pletcly by surprise, int replied feel- ingly, thanking the members of Conn- ell ou behalf of himself and Mrs. Kel- man for the expression of their good - Will and appreciation, Me, and IFNs.
