'fhltt ie what I need to think when I n!red to be a Little Star. The only way to know aboutludia, really, is to ties it yam, self, though. So perhaps I will be welcoming some of you seine day to this big corner of otos wonderful British Empire. There were two tholes I thought 1 should mind a great tl' al iii India— heat and snakes, hue ellen we that 4. arrived in India tire elinette w:t'+ de- 4 + lightPul. It reminded , me of Oalifornia, Every day I would + come out to breakfast saying, "Isn't t ie ';' a lovely day P" But sine-.• there 'teen's _t been one day of gent sire, 1 , one, 1 + have rather given up remarking + about it. It ie vet y bot now .cud it is only our Spring. I started up in my d' sleep and heard e el:Ailiir;„ moving s right beside my '' 1, 1t first I .i• couldn't tell whet it .v:1., hitt when I + heard, "Na, na-u-.0 I I.t .v it was a lost kid. I couldn't p+^ -:rolls it to stay out so'I had t,.: licit t lits doors, Everything seems s,1 diifere er here. There is not one bird or +are 1 ree that 1 ever saw before. Birds are all very gay. I see brilliant 'toeene, yellows and blues flashing from use to tree but they cannot sing like the Cana- dian birds. We have malty crows too not so large as our mows, but even saucier in fact Coeanada lu.• re* "Crow town." In our Compound we Inr.ve a big banyan tree, atneeel tre-es, cocoanut, palms, pulmft'in !auutlti•r pabn), as well as many whirl I carat name yet. So many of the t t sus have gay flowers. There is one that blooms when weather is butte= -t. It has bright red blossenis and is called "Flame of the Forest." Another has flowers like big yellow hollyhocks. Quite near ns there are iatge orange and banana orchard,. But trees and flowers are by no means the meet in• teresting things. !'bete is something much more I•ttsciirating—that is the people. At first one is impressed with their numbers. Wherever one goes there are rrowds. The bazaar is full of them, the train% are always crowded and there' are always people passing our Compound from morning until night. I thought they were very dark at first but the people here are not nearly so dark as those farther South. Some of them -are much fairer than others and they do delight in every degree of fairness they possess. My munehi even asked me one day if in my country people had disliked me at all because my hair was black, The munshi is my Telugn teacher yon know, He certainly does not look like any teacher I ever had seen be- fore. He can speak English very well indeed and he does love to quote English poetry, especially Gray's Elegy. His two sons and 'his daugh- ter died, and he feels so badly about it. He tells me many strange things about the customs of the people, Every day when he goes away from our house, he bathes and mays before er 1 . h to he eats because f hpve . nr l]nl 1 I One morning he went nt^'ny quite early. I do wish I could tete! yon to the Bazaar, that is where von sr•i' rAln life, the dirt and the so•diidness of Indict, as well as much that','is interesting, On either side of the narrow road are the little shops opening tight on the street. Everybody jostles together, people of all kind" ut automobiles, on motor cycles, on bicycles, in carriages, ox carts, and many, many on font, The coachmen call repeatedly for the people to Clear a way tag they don't pay much attention. indeed often just as one thinks the way is clear, ,t little child will dart out, and run across in n of hectics r .uta- front > niebil'e for this is the land where the ack k to Town + + + + As I have returned to Brussels to make my $ home I am prepared to resume business along the old lines andwill v'll ha ndle any quantity of Junk at the best prices going. 4. + r Phone 2x M. Maybe you wonder just what you could buy in this Bazaar. Some of the tiniest stores consist of a box with a long . bunch of bananas hanging above it, or :t few otanges and soda bottles. You could buy the oranges for about a cent apiece but they are smaller than ants in Canada. Banan- as are about h rente a dozen. They too are smaller than the ones we boy in Canada. The bigger stores have cocoanuts, jackftuit, custard, apples and many other fruito we don't know in Canada. We have stoles where one may buy Surprise soap, moth balls, castile soap, perfume, patent medicine and many other things. The cloth shops are very busy places, There one sees a line of whirring sew- ing machines 100 by Mohammedans in skirts and red fez caps. Of coutse you will be wondering if one can buy candy. You can buy heaps of candy. They make cue kind of peanut balls stuck together with taffy, for you know we have a great deal of sugar cane grown right here, If you have not enough money to buy candy you can buy a toot of sugar cane and chew it. You will certainly not get through the Bazaar without many beggats following you. Give to one and there will be a dozen more beggars at your side, It ie so hard to be just for some of these people are unwilling to work, they would rather beg. One thing you must be sure to do when you come home from the Bazaar is wash. I really believe even the boys who aren't fond of water would want to, for one feels so dirty. You would love the wee children here. They have such bright eyes, When I pass along the street they come running out from the houses, raise their right hands to their fore- heads and shout "Salaam ! salaam! salaam ! oma," You know they don't wear any clothes, and as they play in the dust alt day, their little brown bodies me fairly well plastered with their old Mother Earth. 1 like to ware!] the ace boys and girls coning from school with their. books. It is a new sight and a good Hight. and a geed sight in India. The 1 children don't have to gn to school here yet but some of theta are very aextolls to leettr. If they know iL word or twoof English they feel se proud, They will call "Ulnad Evening slalom." I feel most interested in the 1 ttle gills of India, You know until very recently to he a, Irl in India meant to start life with a handicap. Do you iritis thine that is fair?
