If the fruit grower, vegetable grow- er, or flower glower does not spray r owadaya, he is almost certain to have Lefotem' preclude in hie orchatxi, small Elicit plantation and garden, There are so many injurious insects and diseases which affect a large pro- portion of the plants ho grows that if they are untonttrollod there Wilt wither be no crap'left or else the value of the crop will be very much reduced. There are few of these ineocts and dfseages which cannot be well con- trolled by using some of the remodiee which have bean discovered during the past twenty -Ave or thirty yeare and which have been well tested by many experiments, Spraying must, however, be thor- o ughly clone if good results are to be obtained. Materials are expenelve, and the cost of labor is high, and money will be wasted if the work be improperly done or not done at the right time, The early spraying are, as a rule, the most important, and those who contemplate spraying as all should wlto have orchards or gardens, should get everything do readiness to begin at the right time as delay may mean much loss. Spray Calendare are is- sued by the Dominion and Provinotal Departments of Agriculture, in which several sprayings are reeonmended to be applied at certain stages in the development of the Ieaves, flowers, and fruit. In the case of fruit trees the spray should be applied so that every- leaf, bud, and fruit will, if pos- sible, receive some of the material, not only an one part of it, but as clearly all over as possible. Every leaf, flower and bud or young fruit niheed means a possible starting point for disea4e er insect pests. Chateau de Ramezay One of Montreal's Historic Relics, The running of the sands of time aloue can give the proper perspective and value to historic buildings, Socie- ties spring up to preserve these relice of the past. Perhaps the most famous of these memorials of the past in Canada is the Chateau do ltamezay in 'Montreal, which lute remained almost untouched since the days of the old French re- gime. It was built in 1705 by Seigneur Claude de Rameeay, eleventh gove.:nor of Montroal. Hero he kept open house with his wife, whose hand was the re- ward of his gallant cordo with 800 men fn aid of Quebec in 1690, when the Comet de Frontenac, governor et eanada, fended off the Engiistt fleet of fete William Phipps, The Chateau stands in what was un a the fashionable ram! 0f old Mort - n real. poled mansions and gardens that e ntoi'gt ti into the neighboring fncss To -day the houses of Montreal have forsaken the bury waterfront and climb, their alarming gardens still e clinging to them, up the elopes of s Mount Royal,, e Frutn the days of de ilatneza,i the - Chateau has been the scene of many y hietorte assetublies. its roof shelter- ' ea only the governors-general, le their suites of fair women and brave r; men and their illustrious guests, but ✓ bin traders, scouts, militia leaders. and - iudlans. in. 1746 it passed into the hands of the Campngnie des Ludes and as Eaidta 1:Iouse become tho centre of a great fur trade, filliug this picturesque and important role for uearly twenty 70ars. In 1763, after the cession of Canada, it was again the residence of the governor, and invitations to recep- tions held there [luring the following century are still in existence. The Chateau was headquarters for tate army of the Continental Congress in its fruitless effort to hold Canada for the thirteen colonies. After Bene- dict Arnold failed in his treason he retired to Montreal and stayed there for a time. Benjamin Franklin lived in the Chateau witeit he visited Mont- real in 1776 in his effort to persuade the French Canadians to join the new nation to the south, but his was a vain hope. During his stay there he es- tablished the Montreal "Gazette," which le still running. Needless to say, he did not found this paper for the purpose of propaganda, After 1849, tite Chateau was for thirty -Svc years used far government offices. When the government re- moved to Ottawa, the city presented the Chateau to the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society for a inuseutl.t, and as such it is unique. Its collec- tion contains all sorts of things rang - fug from crude house -made utensils fashioned by the clumsy hands of fron- tier habitants to portraits done by world-renowned artists. One of the /lest precious things among the thousands catalogued is the Louis- bourg bell, hung in the church there in 1724. 1'ow' Dog's Bad Habits. ttittce your clog's bad habits wee be owing to an unsuspected cause, learn el much as you eau about his part be. foie you attempt to correct him. Canada producee 00 per cent, of the lobster supply of the world, and in addition, the finest lobsters. Tho lobsters of the New l0ngland coast are the little brothers ot the noble crustaceans native to the more north- ern and colder waters of Labrador, and, Indeed, Canadian female lobsters are selected for use to American hatcheries to Improve the strain. The Labrador coast has the greatest known supply, but is too distant to be available for commercial purposes at present, The main supply now comes from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, par- ticularly around the famous Island of Anticosti, and from the waters about Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia is famous for romance, apples, cherries, and, tact but not least, lobsters. The government has every intention that this happy state of affairs shall continue and 1naintatns fifteen. hatcheries in the province. The lobsters -are also guarded out of sea- son by strict protective laws. The Nova Bootie 1919 lobster sea• son has been very satisfactory. The total catch is given as 5,825,096 pounds, valued at $1,396,846. The catch was somewhat smaller than in 1918, when the quantity was 6,288,820 pounds, but a' much higher valuation le pot on the 1910 catch. The value 00 the 1918 catch was 5799,397. In 1919 there were 1,020,864 pounds of Iobsters put up in the canneries and 4,831,233 pounds of live lobsters were exported. In Nova Scotia the price for live lobsters was 10 cents a pound, but much higher prides were paid la Boston, where canned Nova Scotia lobster brought 67.8 cents a pound. The 1910 season lasted only from March 1 to May 31, instead of from December 15 to May 31. as in pre- vious years. • Earth's Formation. Any theory which attempts to ex- plain the formation of our world oust take into account certain curious facts. Among these are, erg: There is a groat preponderance of land iu the northern hemisphere and of water in the southern. Second: Most oceans and most continents are more or less triangular in shape and they nearly all point southward. Third: The land forms an almost unbroken ring in the north and water in the south, Fourth: If we place a map of the northern hemisphere over'the southern it will be found that land never falls over land, but always over water, except in a few small patches. These curious facts have given rise to the so-called "tetrahedral" theory of the formation of our globe, It has been found by experiment that a round tube under pressure tends to collapse into a triangular form. This gives the greatest amount of surface for the relative area. Our earth in cool - Mg shrinks, and consequently its spherical form (maintained by its re- volution oe spinning) tends to fall in- to this triangular or tetrahedral shape. The result of this is that cer- tain flat surfaces are formed and also certain points or angles which pro- ject. Water, being fluid, tends to flow onto the flat spaces, being nearer the ceutor of gravity than the projecting turners, The result is that the "continents," which correspond on this theory to the cornet's, would project or rise above the level of the water, and if we examined a map at tate world with this theory In view it will be found that the general conformation of the land and water and their distribntfon on our globe correspond precisely to this theory. There is only one way to build up a run down system if the blood is pale and thin. Many diseases are caused by thin blood. Other diseases such as influenza and rheumatism cause the blood to become thin and the wasting effect 00 these disorders cannot be combated successfully until the blood is restored to its normal condition. Pallor, nervousness, indigestion, sleeplessness, headaches, dizzy spells, shortness of breath, palpitation of the heart, these are a few of the symp- toms of an anaemic bloodless condi- tion. Some of them are not naturally associated with thin bleed, but the quickest way to overcome them is to make the blood rich and red. Dr. Williame''Pink Pills do one thing and do it well, They build up the blood, increasing the number of red corpuscles. As this is done the blood becomes a richer red and is able to carry more oxygen, the great sup- porter of human lite. As the blood improves in quality the tissues of the body are batter nourished and the functions of the body are better per- formed. The glands of the stomach are stimulated and the first sign of improvement is usually a better appe• tate and better digestion. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have been used for years as a blood -making tonic and system builder with such good results that in every community there are many people who are recommend- ing this remedy to their friends and to others who are afflicted, Here is the statement et one per- son among thousands who have used Dr. Williams' Pink Pills to their own great advantage. Mrs, A. Veniot, Hemtord, N.S:, says:—"For about two years I was a great sufferer from in- digestion, which seemed to carry with it a complication of other troubles. Every meal I took brought with it misery, as it was followed by pain, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. At other times gas would forth in the stomach to such an extent that my heart would palpitate at an alarming rate. Those conditions brought on extreme nervousness and irritability, and I found my general health so much affected, that the least exertion would tire me and I slept but poorly. I had been doctoring for several months, with no result beyond slight temporary relief, when I was advised by a friend to try Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. I decided to follow this advice and got a half a dozen boxes. Good re- sults soon began to show from this treatment, and the further continued use of the pills have made me a well woman. I can cheerfully recommend Dr. Williams' Pink Pills to similar sufferers." The purpose of Dr, Williams' Pink PIM is to build up the blood, They do this one thing and they do it well. They are an invaluable remedy in dig- eanes arising from bad or de0cient blood, as rheumatism, neuralgia, after effects of the grip and fevers. The pills are guaranteed to be tree from opiates or any harmful drug and can- not injure the most delicate system. You can got these pills through any dealer in medicine, or by mail at 50 cents a box or six boxes for $3.50 from The Dr. Williams' Medicine Co,, Brockville, Ont. How the Tank Got Its Name. As the woric progressed it became neces- sary to invent a butter story to ate count for the existence of the plant. So very clandestinely, it wasallowed to become known front the war office that oil twine for Russia were being manufactured in great numbers, Prom this story the name "tank" canto to be applied to the stew form et armored car before their use ie battle, intel the name stuck. 517. 7, SCIATICA Would you be rat of that wakening thrust pate—that; 1yy a01at11 ne)9 - Urn0 u- everY movement?
