that possibly could be done without
avail. Mr. McGregor lived on the

bor, and will be greatly missed. He
WEIR married about 8 years ago to Miss
Emily Hutu, daughter of W. and Mm.
Hunt, of the Soo, who survives him
with 4 small boys, and the deepest sym-
pathy of hosts of frieuels is extended to
the sorrowing widow and sous in their
hour of trial, also to the sisters aud
brothers of the deceased, Findlay and
William, who live on the Island and An-
drew, of Edmonton, Alta., and Mrs. W.
A. Lowry, Mrs. Sholdice and Mrs. Bul-

Furniture Goes Up
Up goes the price of furniture. At
a meeting o fthe furniture section of
the Canadian Manufacturers' Assoc!.
talon it was decided to make an in-
crease of from 10 to 20 per cent, the
latter percentage to apply to pieces
of furniture wherein the mirror is an
important item of coSt. The reason
for the advance in prices is the in-
creased cost of labor and materialS,
Shellac which is very un -portant in
the furniture trade, is now $6.60 per
gallon, and advance of $2,20 on the
quoted price of three months ago, A
pane of glass, costing seven cents in
49't, increased to 37 e ants during
the war and now stands at about 50
cents,

Some Insurance Figures
Insurance business, other than fire
or In, was carried on in Canada in
-1918 by 84 companies -26 Canadian,
17 British,- and 44 foreign, In addi-
tion, there were in 0917 six fraternal
orders or societies which carried on
sickness Insurance and also life insur-
ance, as stated in the Canada Year
Book for 1918,
Erect Many Signs
The Ontario Motor League has Just
completed erecting more than 1,500
road signs on the principal highways.
The road -sign car during the past
three months has covered more than
5,000 miles. A number of the signs
were special notices erected on separ-
ate poles at some of the important
road junctions, giving directions and
information to motorists,
An Unfortunate Accident
Miss Laurel Shaw, daughter of Rev.
E. A. Shaw, of Welburn, who is nurse -
in -training in Woodstock General Hos-
pital met with an accident there
lately while on duty. Miss Shaw was
heating some of the prepared dishes
of the patients in the gas oven. She
had lowered the light, which in some
Wily went out, and while attempting
to relight it, the escaping confined gas
exploded. Fier face and arms suffered

Holds Municipality Is Responsible
Judge Madden ,of Napinee, has ren-
dered a judgement that puts it right up
to municipalities to keep the high-
ways in repair or pay damages that
may result from failure to do so,
Judege Madden found the County of
Lennox and Addington guilty of !nein-
Mining a nuisance by not keeping a
road in repair, accompanying this rul-
ing being a fine of $400 and costs
(41150), and a further fine of $100 for
contmpt of court in not taking steps
to abate the nuisance as directed by
the court at the last sittings.
Children Should Be Careful
Children playing on the street are
taking long chances from passing
automobiles. Parents cannot be too
careful in this matter. A driver
never knows just what a child will
do, and most of them take every pre-
cn9tion, but at timesa wrong move
of a child may cause a fatality, even
if the car is not moving more than
four miles an hour. Then again, the
child often flirts with death by see-
ing how close he may let the auto
come to him before moving. The
public highways is not a prop-
er play ground.
Canada Year Book
The Canada Year Book 1 91 8, has
been issued and contains the usual
amount of statistical information in
regard to the progress of Canada. It
has also the story of "Confederation"
by Sir Joseph Pope, IC, C., M, G., Un-
der Secretary of State for External
Affairs, Ottawa. It has also a chron-
ological history of 'Canada, 1497-1918.
The fifty years of Canadian progress
is compiled by the editor, Ernest H.
Godfrey, of the Dominion Bureau of
Statistics Ottawa. This is a useful
book for reference to the business
men as well as all who wish readily to
find facts in regard to the develop -
4111111 of Canada and is publishd by
the authority of Right Honorable Sir
Geo. E. Foster, K. C., M. G., Minister
of Trade and Commerce..
A Lennon To Others
What proved to be a dear job for
George Cousins of this town , says
the Kincardine Review, may be a
warning to others. On Monday
Cousins was up before Magistrate
Mackenzie on a charge of defacing
goVernment property . It consisted
of writing on the walls and over the
public writing desk at the post of-
fice. While a fine of $50 with six
months added might have been met-
ed out, the Magistrate showed len-
iency owing to it being his first 04 -
fence and after a severe lecture as-
seostsiins
esdthe accused $23 and costs.
c
may consider himself a lucky
boy if he gets free with the present
fine as the nature of the inscription
in which he Stooped so to to enaet,
leaves him open to a second charge
and one Which in the eye of the law
calls for a much more severe penal-
ty than that for which he was effete, -
ed such leniency. There has been
too much of this kind of work going
on about the post office, and from
now on those who are indulging in
the business had better call a halt,
as their movements are being cover-
ed every time they enter the build.

A Peace Stamp
The issuance of a special Canadian
postage stamp, commemorating the
signing of the peace treaty, is now
under consideration of the postal de-

be of the three -cent denomination, if
it should be decided upon, and prob-
abilities are that it will be printed

Get the News in the Paper
Simcoe Reformer: Day before yes-
terday a perfectly nice lady called
up and with tears in her voice re-
proved us for not mentioning the
fact that she had a friend visiting
her last week. We told her that
site had not let us know that she
had a visitor. Then she said:
"Well you should have known .
thought you were running a news-
paper!" Wouldn't that rattle your
slats? Some people think the edi-
tor ought to be a cross between Ar-
gus and Anna Eva Fay, They seem
to think that our five senses are
augmented by a sixth that lets us
know everything that happens, ev-
en if we see, hear, feel, taste or
smell it not. If you have a friend
visiting you, if you are going away
or have returnd frons a visit out of
town, if Jonnie falls and breaks
his arm, if your husband chops his
toe instead of a stick of wood, if
anything happens to make you glad,
or sad, happy or mad, call up up.
Tell us about it. That's the Way to
get it in the paper.
