FORMER LONDESBORO
TEACHER WINS V. C.
Lieut. S. L. Honey, D. C. M., Died of
Wounds.
The following from the Turunto Tele
gram of January 7th, refers to a former
School teacher at Londesboro in 1912-
13, and was well known to the teach-
ing profession in the East Huron In-
spectorate. The following is the story
of how he Won the Victoria Cross:—
Lieut, Samuel Honey, born 189.4 at
Conn, Ontario, enlisted February 1915,
at Walkerton, died of wounds. 13y
profession at schoolmaster. Orginally
of the 34th Battalion, he gained his
sergeant's stripes, and later his com-
mission. Next of kin, father, George
Honey, of Lemonvilie, Ont.
Rushed Machine -Gun Nest.
Lieut. Samuel Lewis Honey, D,C,M.,
late of the 75th Batt,, Manitoba Regi-
ment, for the most conspicuous brav-
ery during the Bourton Wood operat-
lions from September 27, when his
company commander and all other
officers of the company were casual-
ties, Honey took ever the command
and, skillfully organized it under very
severe fire. He continued to advance
with great dash and gained his ob-
jective. Then, finding the company
was suffering casualties from enfil-
ading machine -gush fire, he located the
machine-gun nest and rushed it single-
handed, capturing the guns and ten
prisoners. Subsequently he repelled
four enemy counter-attacks and after
dark went out alone and located an
enemy post, and led a party that cap-
tured this post and three guns. On
September 29 he led his company
against a strong enemy position with
great skill and daring. He continued
on succeeding days of battle the dis-
play of the same high valor and self-
sacrifice, He died of wounds received
during the last day of the attack by
his battalion.
TRUCK LICENSES
HAVE BEEN RAISED
ANNUAL FEES ARE INCREASED UP-
'- ON GRADUATED SCALE
•
Motor truck owners are closely
affected by one or two notable
changes in the collectiion of provin-
cial revenue through the Motor Traf-
fic act, which will go into effect at
the beginning of the new year. The
annual fees for motor trucks have
been increased upon a( graduated
scale, which recognizes the weight of
cargo, as well its the weight of the
to truck itself. There will be taken
into consideration as the basis of as-
sessment the combined weight of the
truck and its maximum load capa-
city.
apscity. In future trucks of from thvo
to eight tons will pay $5 per ton or
fraction thereof. Trucks upward of
eight tons and not more than ten
tons, will pay $7,50 per ton, and
trucks exceeding ten tons will pay $10
per ton. This schedule resembles
that in use in New York state.

gistration, and a first set of markers
with an additional $5 for each extra
set of markers. In future the gov-
ernment will charge dealers $20 per
set for markers. Dealers say, how-
ever, permit sets of markers issued
to them to be used on any cars they
may choose, so long as such cars are
in private use.
Approximately 110,000 power ve-
hicles are now registered 011 the pro-
vincial register, no fewer than 102,-
000 of these being passenger cars,
and 7400 motor trucks, giving an
average of one motor car to. every 23
of the total population of the Prov-
ince of Ontario. The entire revenue
received by the government from mo-
tor vehicle licenses is estimated at
$1,2000,000, and it is expected that
the additional $100,000 will be raised
as a result of the increase in motor
truck charges.
Speaking of the new rates, W. A.
McLean, deputy (sinister of high-
ways, stated that it was hoped that
by the higher rates levied on the
heavier cars, their use in this prov-
ince would be discouraged, Such cars
he pointed out, greatly increased the
cost of road maintenance, while light-
er cars would do the work as well.
MOTHER'S FOOL
There is a colnmounity not far from
here which is feeling decidedly
foolish.
Mother's Fool is coming home from
the war. He is coming hone with
the D, S. 0., the Croix de Guerre, and
a commission.
This community had never been
good to the big, bashful, sensitive
boy. The girls giggled at him, the
boys "run" on him, and the village
humorist expended all his choicest
witticisms on him,
Perhaps it was all for the best, It
drove hint more and more into the
society of his beautiful and adoring
mother, which, oh, irony of fatal in-
creased the giggles of the girls and
the witticisms of the village fool—
humorist, 1 meant
He enlisted at the first blast of the
bugle, his mother dedicating him , to
his country even as tlannah dedicat-
ed Samuel to the Temple. The vil-
lage (humorist remarked that he
would stop a bullet Just the same's
the best of them, whereat everybody
laughed.
He didn't stop the first bullet that
came his way at St. Julien long ago
—it makes me feel old to think how
long—that bullet went slap through
him, but Mother's Fool stayed in the
game and came right back for more.
He got It in the neck at Vimy Ridge.
With difficulty he wrote home to his
mother,
"it hurts, of course, but it did
not snake me half so sick and
uncomfortable as the time I had
that boil on my neck."
it was from Mother's Fool I learn-
ed that there be worse things, more
painful things, more dreadful things,
than gunshot wounds.
Mother's Fool is corning hone, and
the community is very n1UClh em -
