SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY AID
VICTORY LOAN
As an instance of how science and industry have co-operated in helping to wi
the war, it is interesting to note that Sir Thomas White, K.C.M.G., Minister of
Financo, has made a special "His Maste'r's Voice " Record for the purpose of
actually informing the Canadian Public in his oxen noire concerning the need of
the second Victory Loan.
Science has thus made it possible for the voice of the Finance Minister to be
heard its thousands of places in every part of the Country at the same time, .'
The illustration shows Sit' Thomas " caught in the act " as he made his special
recording at the laboratories of the Berliner Grail -o -phone Company, Limited,
Montreal.
IN RETIREMENT
Ferdinand of Bulgaria, "the Balkan
"Fox," dethroned and now in re-
tirement in Vienna.
Montes thrown open to the delegates
were hospitable to a marked degree and
the pleasant associations thus formed
will prove a most pleasant memory as
the years hurry past, The growth and
development of the city was a
wonderful surprise to many who went
hone fully cognizant that it was a city
indeed, •
The Harvard plan was followed by
the Conference viz„ your billet sup-
plied you with bed and breakfast and
dinner and tea were served in the base-
ment of the church by the ladies of the
church, at a rate of about 50c a meal.
This plan imposed too heavy a task,
however, and supper was cut off and
the delegates planned for this at hotel
or cafe, according to their pleasure.
Any housekeeper will have some faint
idea of what it meant to prepare for a
family of from 350 to 400 every day,
Nearly the whole delegation were seat-
ed at one time in the great improvised
dining hall. By this method you form-
ed the acquaintance of many a man,
East and West, for you could not fail
to ascertain who your right and left
hand supporters were as well as those
who sat opposite at the table. The
meal hour thus became a sort of an
informal conve'sazione and ntost•.pn-
joyable as well as informational as you
rubeed elbows with the good fellows
I from 'leer -and. fart all bent on impprov-
ing the opportunity of ascertallung
"who is who" or in knitting Up old
aequalntances of years ago.
Among those wlto attended the Gen-
eral 'Conference from this locality were
Rev. H. .1 siren, Kincardine; Rev, [Ino,
A, Agnew, Clinton; Rev. W. H. Grehene
and 0, 13, Hale Stratford; Rev, W. 13-
Millson and J, C. Ilay of Listowel; Wm,
Lyons, Blyth; and W, H, Kerr, Brussels,
While there was a disposition on
the part of a few of the delegates to
have attacks of verbosity, many of
then) proved better listeners titan an-
xius to take up time and were quite
ready after a few sessions to vote for
5 minute speeches, a regulation that
was well enforced by the gavel in the
hands of Rev. Dr, Chown,
The Evangelistic note and co-Operae
tion and unifying were much in evi-
detce and the laity were not in seennd
place in it. Several conferences were
held by the laymen, at one of which a
Laymanst Association for Methodistn
was formed, of which F, B. Holtby, of
St, Thomas, was elected President.
While the question of Church Union
was tabooed as far as utterances by
the Conference were concerned the
laymen front the West gave no uncer-
tain pronouncement upon it as it re-
lated to the territory they represented,
There were some very inspiring pat-
riotic addresses which were most en-
titusiastically received by the large
audiences that sometimes crowded the
audience roost and galleries,
Many re -unions were held by grad-
uates of the variolas Educational insti-
tutions at Toronto, Montreal, Stan-
stead, Belleville, Winnipeg and Edition -
ton and the boys of the 0111 brigades
were most jubilant over these informal
At domes as they recited the stories
of the days gone 'by.
In the next letter particulars will be
given as to the growth and develop-
ment of the church and the organiza-
tions, new legislation enacted, the offi-
ciary for the ensuing quadrennium, &c,

HELIGOLAND,
BIRD STATION'
"Aerial invasion of 11eligolend!"
What a flue headline it would make,
and it is true for the invasion is now
in progress, though the invaders are
not sten but birds. The island is one
of the landmarks of the birds mt-
grating from the north, and night
after night, beginning in early Sep-
tember, they pass !n countless armies,
In times of peace the islanders turn-
ed the bird invasion to profit, stir-
ring abroad all night with lantern and
nets, trapping weak or weary birds
that paused for a few minutes' rest.
Fifteen thousand larks alone have thus
been caught In a single night, of
which number a lighthouse man
caught three hundred by fixing a wire
net outside the great lantern. -Man-
chester Guardian,
Every forty minutes a vessel leaves
an American port for Europe, But
the fact is even more impressive that
vessels from North America, loaded
with soldiers, munitions, and supplies
for the allies, are arriving in Europe
at the rate of one every forty (nintiles.
