Out of the War,
The see -saw of victory and d
in Russia ended on March 12,
the revolution broke, lriutteeings
the Duma against graft and cor
tion in the army, which had led to
cessive Russian defeats aid opsn h
of "dark forces" controlling' the C
government, caused Nicholas to o
the dissolution of the Duma,
members resisted, imprisoned the

with Prinee L wolf and Professor

stem the tide of disaster,
Alexander F. I{erensky, Ministe
Wer, a radical socialist but no
Maximaliet, succeeded in making
temporary diversion. On July 1
went to the southwestern front, pia
himself at the head of the Rus
troops and began a new drive on L
berg. .
On Sept '1 the Germans began
offensive on the Riga front, cross
the Dvina at Uxkull. Part of the It
elan troops withdrew, refusing
fight, and the Germans entered 31
on Sept. 3. They gradually exten
their positions, capturing Jacobs(
on Sept. 21 and crossing the Livon
River Aa, tints holding -a small
angle between the Dvina and the G
of Riga.
Russia's Collapse.
Kerensky on Sept. 15 proclaim
the establishment of a republic in R
nit, and a month later, as a sop
the exti•emista, formed a coalition g
eminent, announcing the purpose
ranking peace in connection with
the otter allies. This was seized up

sky's weakness in allowing disconte
to spread in the army caused moth
revolution in Petrograd. Kerenslt
was deposed end Lenin° assumed t]
premiership, with Trotsky as foreig
minister.
Then they proposed a general peat
without annexations -ce indemnitie
and began negotiations with the ce
tral powers for an armistice. Th
was signed at Brest -Litovsk on De
15, effective two days later. It is t
last twenty-eight days, ending o
Jan. 14, 1918, at noon. Trotsky nett
proposed "a general peace" and liege
negotiations with Germany for a sep
- orate peace. Thus Russia passes on
of the war unless and until the bolshe
viki government is overthrown.
Russia's collapse automatieally
forces Rumania out of the war. Isol-
ated from all help, she was obliged .to
join in the bolshevilci armistice,
ARTIFICIAL EYES.
Represent the Highest Development
of Glassblowers' Skill,
The war is making at extraordinary
demand for glass eyes—so many are
the fighting men who lose one or both
of their own eyes at the front.
When a man is totally blinded he
usually lets •it go at that; but if one
eye be lost he gets an artificial one, to
avoid disfigurement,
We in this country do not know
how to make artificial eyes. It is
really a fine art, and may be said to
represent the highest development of
the glassblowers' skill.
The beginning of, an artificial eye
is a small glass tube with a bulb in
the middle. One end is cut off, and
the opening sealed with the blowpipe,
leaving a hollow bulb on the end of
a tube,
The workman, of course, carr enlarge
the bulb as he pleases by blowing into
the tube, This he does gradually and
et intervals, while applying melted
glass of different colors to the ex-
tremity of the bulb,•
First he puts on a circular spot of
blue or brown for the iris, and in the
centre adds a black dot for the pupil,
!3y autistic manipulation he counter-
feits the delicate effects of coloration
observed in the huinan eye.
The process cannot be more definite-
ly described because it is art work, and
not merely a mechanical performance,
A special glass is added to imitate the
Nadia): whitish opacity of. the white
part of the eye; and even the Mitered
veins in the latter are reproduced,
During' these processes the bulb and
tube are kept hot and soft. Finally
the front half of,tlte biilb is cut off
with sharp scissors, and this half is
the all -but -finished eye, requiring only
to have its edges made smooth,
Most glass eyes are made in Ger-
meny, and they • cost only about $5 t
apiece, This source of supply has been f
cut• off by the war. But the finest ar-
tjficial eyes are of b4'enoh manufac-
ture, one are of porcelain. The pro- c
0905 of making thein is secret, and the 1
price is anywhere from 816 to 8$50, v
