The custom of decorating the table at Hallowe'en) In black and yellow, or black anti gold, or black and orange, per- petuates the favorite colors of the ancient sorcerers, 'Tire yellow had its origin in the fruits of the earth, for example the green ap- ple, then the yellow or golden fruit, or the green ear of the crops and the yellow sheaf, The black re„r'esents the sable robes of the Druid necromancer's who wore that color in tribute to Shaman, the iced of death and evil spirits who once a year went on the ram- page on the eve or the yeast. The Druids Began It For the Druids were great magi- cians. The word comes from the Gaelic 'rils'uidh,'' a magician, The D.utcis were a religious order among the ancient Celts, and their office appears to have combined that. of priest, •physician, wonder- wonker, historian and law -giver, the order comprising three prin- cipal . grades—bards, vates or prohpets, and the Druids proper, the priests. It is. not known whether Druidisf was a pre -Celtic religion taken over by the Celts fro attire aborigines of Europe, but bhe Celts themselves ascribed its origin to the British. The fact that mistletoe was held sacred had led to the belief that Druidism was originally a form of tree worship, and why not the apple tree with its growth of fruit and mistletoe. Fox Breeders To Start Taking Their Pelts Soon Dozens of sliver black fox breed- ers 1n Harald and Perth will com- nlenee pelting within another three weeks, November 15 usually is looked upon as the time to start, 011 depends a lot, though, on the weather," says George Blake, a large breeder In Grey township, three miles 110111 here, "Good frosty weather Is needed if the fur is to prime the way it should, ast year am we had good cold weather some snow In Ortoher and the fur Primed earite. than it is likely to this season, If the weather is not cold enough the leather side of the fur is slower in turning from blue 10 a light flesh tint. It is very es- sential that the leather should be flesh tint, because the blue leather will not hold the fur, Consequently, buyers are not going to give you the best price for pelts like that." The fur of the fax undergoes rarid changes in the Fall of the year, as pelting time approaches, and feeding and environrent play as important a part in Its growth as climate conditions do. The pelts are taken off when the .prime stage of fur and leather is just being en- tered, before the guard hairs show any tinge of brown or bronze. Prince fur sometimes Is taken before the leaves ate off the trees, but if taken so early the breeder usually takes ofl a single pelt and examines the lerther side to make sure that the leather has turned ' from. blue to light flesh color. Blue leathered pelts are more or less im- prime and are discounted accord- ingly by the fur buyers. A prime pelt has no blue spots on the leath- er side and shows no tra.ces of brown on' bronze on the flu' side. Paid $1,100 For Two Pairs Mr, Blake who will pelt more than 100 foxes next month, has been in the fox raising business for the last 12 years. A common farmer, 11e discovered a long time ago, cannot make a decent living unless 11e has a sideline to supplement his earn- ings from the laud. Looking about for a profitable sideline when tilis realization dawned upon him, Mr. Blake Picked on fox raising. "I paid $1,100 for two pairs of silver blacks hack in 1926.'' Mr. Blake said, "That may sound like a lot of money, but back in 1913 just before the war, breeders were known to pay as high: as $3,500 for a single ;pair. The first year I was in the business I didn't raise a Prue, and I put that down to 1n - experience, Tile second season I purchased another female and I raised 12 paps that year. Ten years ago pelts were bringing an average of about $75, but the average last season was not more than $33. Sev- eral things contribute to the fact that pelts are not bringing as much today as they did some years ago. One of the major reasons, no doubt, is because so many Have gone into the game and a lot of inferior pelts ale being offered." "in view of these tretnendous ad v;uu es in ine tor car de.sign and operation'; added Air.
