The Brussels Post, 1938-8-31, Page 2THE BRUSSELS POST ENTITLED "FORBIDDEN" By Allan Rhodes And it she did not loin In that toast the man did not notice it, for now with his erratic natuhe ingaan- ed by her aloof beauty, he was con- sumed wire]. jealousy-lealeusy of the man who, during 'those long hours of adventure, had shared the company of his young wife. Something had awakened a new emotion in the heart of a man who was a mass' of ill -balanced likes and dislikes', and violent tempers. He turned again to her and had her in his arms. 'You are lovely, Leonie," he whispered, hotly. "To -night you look so beautiful!" So very beauti- ful, my dear." "Oh, Powell, after three years.!" laughed Leonie, and she turned away her, head, She was unable to bear the sight of that thin-lipped mouth so close to hers. "I think you are very strange." "You call it strange for me to want to kiss' my wife?" He tight- ened his gree on her slim body. "Come now, lips like yours are made for kissing, Leonie! Lift them, my dear!" And she stood rigid, her husband took ber chin in his hand and with cruel strength twisted her head round until her eyes' were staring into his and her quivering mouth felt his lips hovering lingeringly over hers, "Let me go! Powell, let me go at once, I say!" Anger came to her aid and she stamped her foot hysterically; to her unstrung state of mind and body Powell's. caress was an insult. "Why should I?" he asked, "I have a perfect right to kiss you if Room 'cote Why let all that space In your basement go to waste? Let us show you how little it costs to tura it into a game room offering fun and relaxa- tion for young and old. We'll do the job quickly and with- Iout disturbance to the house- hold routine. And, best of I all, it's another of those jobs you can finance, if necessary, ander the Home Improve- ment Plan. LOCAL ADVERTISER'S NAME HERE 1 want to, You have never minded before, so why should you now? Perhaps you have found someone whose kisses' you like better, eli?" That startled her and she knew that at all costs, Powell Carr, ex- tremist in all things, must never dream: that in one mad night she found love, though the mean she loved had been almost as cruel in his way a sher husband was in his. To keep her bitter-sweet secret was all she wished, and so she laughed, her eyes Yelled suddenly by her lashes and her body relaxed slightly, x "Powell, you are acting like a romantic boy instead of a sane man. Who should I kiss' but you -my bus- band?"she asked, And the maty crushed her to him, closer and still closer until her soul shrank, "That's right, my little Leonie," he said. "But w'hy were you so cold just now, eh?" "You are so strong -you hurt my shoulders," she said and he laughed that noiseless laugh or his that semi shivers down her body. And he made no attempt to loos- en his hold on her, "Life hurts and failure and - love." he whispered, "I am always suffering, Leonie, always.. The pains in my head, and the agony in my soul Ah, that is worst of all! You must not mind if I hurt you sometimes because I like you to suffer, And then, when the tears are blinding your eyes, you. think, poor Powell, I am sorry for him if he suffers one half of what I am suffering.' ' "Powell, Powell -are you mad?" Real fear lent strength to her voice and hands as she wrenched herself tree. Her cry had had the power to calm him, and, with a shrug of his shoulders, he sank into a chair by the table to pour out a glass. of wine with a hand that shook, "I don't know if I am sane or not," he said, and the words' added to her new-born terror. There are timeswhen the blood in my veins ,pounds like lava rushing down the sides of a volcano, at others it Is cold as Ice in a glacier," He tossed off his wine and rose unsteadily, "Well, whatever it is, I ant living for my work, you know that. I never sleep at night for thinking of the Golden Bird and of the dawn that will see her rise to fly away from me -away, perhaps for ever. Who knows if site will make her first and last flight when she leaves me nest month? .01t, girl, you will be honored beyond all my dreams of glory when you pilot her! You and you alone, my wile!" And as Ile Covered her face and lips with kisses; Leonie knew with terrible certainty that he was Wil- ling to send her to what might be her death! CHAPTER Ill, The Command! Contrary to Leoa!e's expectations, Powell announced his intention of motoring to London to meet the train on which Beric Masters. was arriving, "Muse be there," he remarked, "After all, Masters is a clever man and there's one or two things I want to ask him about the route - it may came in useful again. So limey and get ready, Leonie," "You don't want me, surely?" The girl glanced at her husband in slight consternation. I believe in it" "1 irate It!" said Leonie, "And T look hideous' in those newspaper pictures." "My dear, you look lovely -al- ways!" Powell was in his sauvest mood, but she saw his mind was set in her accompanying him to towel and reluctantly dressed to face the London crowds, She felt absurdly excited, too, as the great ear shot out of Surrey, for she would see and talk to Berle .11as•tere, even though she had bidden him goodbye. As Powell haat predicted there were Press photogrepbers and re- porters, at Waterloo, and as soon as their car arrived, people waiting to see Berle Masters•, surged rounl them and it was with difficulty Powell made bis way with. Leonie to the arrival platform , Punctual to the minute the long train steamed alongside, and the crowd swayed forward, whilst ex- erted murmurs heralded the fact that .lusters tad been seen. But before all those other curious eyes had seen the tall, hawk -faced man, Leonie' eyes had found hint, The next moment he was witt.h them, a hubub of voices drowning, his conventional greeting, "Just a minute, if you please, Captain Masters, Thank you. Now one of you, please, Mr. Carr -oh, Yes, please -shaking elands with Captain Masters, Beautiful! Thanks so much." In high spirits --for he loved being in in the limelight -loved the star- ing crowd and the eager queries loved to see the cameras directed upon him-Leonie's husband posed and talked and gave the reporters all the information they wanted. Anyone would have thought that he was the returned pilot, so much did he take the centre re the stage, "Come along, Leonie!" he cried, excitedly, "You stand here be- tween etween us•! Masters, you on my wife's right --that's the idea!" And Leonie was in front of a battery of cameras whilst Powell flung his arm round her shoulder. ellabIters, put your arm around her loo, so --•that is right! Now we are ready, Mr. Photographer. The family group complete!" And so it went 0h until Berle Masters called a very definite halt and refused to "Break any more cameras," as be said curtly, Then a little woman pushed for- wasd and grasped Powell by the arra just as they were struggling to the car, and her plea held Powell back. "Yes, well, I don't mind Baying a few words about the Golden Bird's flight," he said, pleasantly. And a little hush fell upon those nearest the three distingulehed figures -the young airwoman who had made a daring attempt to break all previous records, her intrepid pilot, who had saved her life, and Pouell Carr, the famous inventor! They were all figures' of romance, and the slim beauty of the girl ex- cited much admiration, Now, however, the crowd hung breathlessly upon the speech of her husband the reran who was 011 tie eve of a wonderful experiment, and many there had heard that when. his machine was ready his young wife would take her on the maiden trip. There was a real thrill about Ire trio, And facing the cir'cie of ex- cited faces, one foot on the stop of the car, one .band on Leonie's shoulder, Powell surveyed all with a light in his eyes that betrayed something of the pride he was feeiing. "The Golden Bird will leave England next month and start in her world flight, She will repre- t:Mit years of work and experbeent, and if she Is suraessful--•as I may say she will be --bey flight will mark a new etroolt in British air history. I am not in the Position to say any more. about i.he machine, because the engine I have invented must not be described, sufficient to day that it is a Vast itniiroVement on all typos of engines used .111 machines at the present esti e." A little tinuniur rippled through She crowd, Powell saluted them airllY, Leanle Shrank back until site wars almost inside the saunter of the saloon, And Berle (Masters stood grins and silent before tier, his desk eyes expressilnlesa inhis. brown face, "I ant sorry for the bad luck that bas attended any ,wife's atteuilpti to fly to the Cape," went on Powell. "And 8 am sure such a brave wo- man, and guest a very experienced pilot as Captain Masters, deserved better results. 1 need hardly tell You I owe Captain Masters a very great debt, fOr he saved 1ny evire's idle, and she is very precious to me, She will pilot the Golden Bird in bed first flight, and---" "Let me say a few words, will You?" Powell stared down at bis wife who, with flushed cheeks, had step- ped beside him. "My husband naturally is very enxiohs to tell you all about :his plans," she said, rapidly, and her voice rose clear and loud, and the dark eyes of Berle Masters' suddenly gleamed. "But se is not aware that owing to an accident to my wrist ---I sesrained is very badly -it ls' possible I shall be unable to make any more flights for some time 'I have kept the worst from. 'him, but ih •Saltiness to you, and the Press, I feel I must contradict his state- ment, it Is not definitely decided that I shall !pilot the Bird. It is, in fact, extremely unlikely:' And in the awkward hush that fell upon everyone the girl turned ' and got into the car again. "There goes the shyest woman in the world," sighed Powell Carr, as. he followed her, and it was he who leaned out and waved to the crowds' as the ear drive slowly out of the station. k * * For some reason best known to ]fusel£ Powell Carr did not chal- lenge Leonie as to why she had re- fitted his statement about her go- ing up with the Golden Bird.
