"FORBIDDEN"
13v Allan Rhodes
Gently he set her down, but held
her to hint, and she felt Ile was
trembling, strong mon though he
WAS.
The red, growing blighter in the
East now the short African night
had fled, toucred his dark face,
lending it greater lire, His two
hands were on her shoulders, pre -s-
ing her bark ---in auguish and yet
in love her eyes looked up at
his, She tried to pray, and must
have succeeded fur strength came --
strength that was born of her
weakness,
"Bene, have mercy!" she whin
peerii,
A moment his grip loosened, he
drew back, leavlug her lying there
and without moving, save for those.
parted lips,
"Oh, you are so strong and I am
weak -weak!" she whispered, "Out
of your strength be generous!"
He was on his feet, A few paces
from her he went then caste back
and stood towering over her as she
lay at his feet. The red flame of
the sunrise was behind him,
"Give me your promise -no, your
oath-ou one thing and I will never
speak to you of my love again un-
less
nless you give me leave," he said
slowly,
'I'll promise anything -anything,'
She was feverishly auxions. Again
that fear of herself possessed her.
She had to attend on his sireng:h
to ;ave them both from a malness
they would repeat always,
"Then promise -swear --that you
will never again fly in any machine
of your ,husband's design, That
you will never take part in any of
his crazy schemes!"
She drew a deep breath, Did he

, now -did he guess -more than
` she had thought? Feebly she ven-
tured to pretest, The condition
Iseemed absurd.
i "But I have iyrolnised I will fly
the Golden Bird round the world as
soon as it is rr-adY. Powell made
me premise,"
"To tite evil with his madman's
Plans!" Masters set his jaw in the
way Leonie knew so well, "It is
your promise to me I want, I am
waiting and I am not patient."
A moment's throbbing silence-
! then catitulatlon,
"Very well, I prolulse I'll not fly
the Golden Bird," she said,
"Nor any other machine In whiolt
1 Powell Carr bas had a hand?"
I "I promise," she said, again,
And then because site was ex-
hausted in mind and body she turn-
ed in her face on the sand and wept
bitterly,
He went away from her towards
the dawn -he mad not bear to see
her tears. And through the silence
came the familiar humming of an
engine,
"Our night is over," Masters said,
coming back to her, and she heard
a note of something she had never
heard before in his voles, She
fancied it was regret.
"Thank heaven!" she murmured,
fervently, and he glanced at her
s wiftly,
"You will never forgive me,"
and his eyes went from her to the
circling aeroplane that came like a
hawk from the blue and gold of the
sky, ''We always pay for what we
do. That will be my price -the
loss of your friendship,"
She wanted to tell him she had
no hatred but love in her heart for
him, but she was another man's
wife and so she stood silent as the
rescue 'plane swooped from the
blue to save them,
CHAPTER II,
Return,
"Mrs. Cart', just give me your
version of the accident will you?
I represent the Daily Round, Thang
you so much? And you were not
hurt? Ob, a twisted ankle-yes-
og on, please. Thank you so much.
"Did you sleet any lions?"
"0f course you will make an-
other attempt.?"
Tin -ting -- voices - telephone
calls---enee.ssl puestions and the
same answers, hour after hour,
"No, I was not hurt. I owe my -
my lilt to the prompt action of
Captain Master -s, Yes -he pulled
me oat of the machine, and a mo-
ment later she burst into flames.
No --1 was not afraid -at lease --not
very much, Yes, I heard one
hyena. No --1 didn't see one Sheik,
but 1 certainly wouldn't like to
camp out on the Sahara again in a
hurry!",
Yhotog(apjis by flashlight -inter-
views by telephone -and so on all
the way to England.
Leonie Carr answered and posed
with mechanical Inrliffeernce, totally
at variance with her usual vivacity,
and one paper hinted that the well-
known air -woman looked 111 after
her trying experience;
Leonie was a very quiet hereine
as she landed on the English
shores, and reached her Immo in
Surrey with a feeling that she was
a different person from the girl
who had left England a short time
ago.
Powell Carr met her at the
station; a tall, white-faced man
with hoick, restless movements, he
Was more concerned about the
cause of the disaster than her wel-
fare.

He shot numerous technic
guosatons at her and barely waste
for her ,to reply to them,
11 was not until the ear, wliic
he was driving, arrived a
rambling old house, that he 1

right,"And are you all right
"Perfectly," answered the go
and as his large and very Ugh
ryes remained fixed on her lac
she flushed, while a new fear crep
into her heart.
"And Masters is coming bac
next week?" he said, sudden'
"Did you have a row with hint?"
"No," said Leonle, awkward'
"at least -we -we ,disagreed ahou
the route once!"
"You would!" cried Powell, an
his thin lints sneered, ''He faatcies
himself as an inventor, Leonie, an
I think it is about time we chadged
your Pilot, dh "
"Yes --1 think so," agreed Leonie,
and her heart grew heavies• as sbe
remembered those moonlit, magical
hours when they had been alone in
the vast desert.
True he had used his power to
exact a promise which she mould
find almost impossible to keep, yet
in spite of that her lips had stirred
beneath bis.
Powell and Leonia dined: alone,
for guests never came to the lonely
old house that stood in its grounds
and sheltered the famous work
shops where Powell worked out his
inventions,
It was a queer meal, punctuated
by broken remarks on either side
and the girl was conscious of her'
dawning aversion for the man
whose name she bore.
He was one who would sacrifice
anything and anybody for his own
ends and she could not help admir-
ing his intensity, He lived Inc the
success of his iuventiony--the latest
of which was an engine that he
vowed would revolutionise the
whole of the flying industry,
"I am glad you are not hurt
Leonie," 11e said, presently, as he
fingered a glas sof Vine with his
long white lingers, "I shall be able
to fix the exact date for the Golden
Bird's start this week, All being
well she will be ready for the trial
next month." '
Leonie raised her wine -glass, but
the red "quid only fell it t;l her 16P
and she set the glass down again.
I -I feel as if I--"
"As if what? He leaned over to
her, his eyes boring'her like flash-
lights, "Not lost your nerve,
have you? Here am I, on the eve
of the most wonderful inventiou
.perfected and I cannot take punt 10
the crowning point of all, And now
you -my wire -are going to let Inc
down It's not fair, I tell you!''
' NAo, of course it isn't,'' agreed
Leonie wearily, Site was tired
and ,he had listened to such a
tirride so often. "Butt perhaps next
year when your nerves are better
and your eyes---"
"Curse my li alth!" shoutedshoutedPow-
ell and he rose, overturning his
Chair. "I ought to be in all the
papers as you are! I ought to tie
the Hero of .my flight when the hour
conies -not you!"
"Then, I say again -wait until
you are well enough-' began
Leonie, but he bwung round on her
savagely,
''Walt! Wait. Do You know
what you are asking me to do? I
can't wait! Every day is precious,
pvel,y hour WAWA: Other men
want to do what I aamgaing to do!
Jiasiers is ready to steal Illy Ideas
if I let h!111! 12!'' De laughed
wildly and Leonie wondered if he
was again on the edge of another
breakdown -or was it b'omething
worse?
She ruse, and her heart was
throbbing quickly,
'I -I ant tired•--4he journey after

all that exeltr'ni and worry has
knocked nip, up, Powell. I think I
will go to bed soon,"
For a moment 1,e'. stored at her 111
sillettce, She looked Bale and very
lovely in her dark dinner frock
with !11e1' .tad.tadhair cittrling her

It was• tt (Umnlner night and
against the pole blue of the sky she
showed slim and supple and appeal-
l rig.
Suddenly the man laughed,
softly,

must etty!"" lie remarked, and Lo 11e1'
disarray he moved and ;stood close
before her, looking down at her itr-
tently

harshly and his eyes narrowed,
"But you don't like Masters, Leonie,
You wouldn't like a man who is
ready to steal from your husband,"
-why should you think Captain
Masters is guilty of such a low
down action?" she demanded,
guickly, "You are Suspicious or
everyone, Powell -everyone. We
have never had a pilot or a
ntechanic yet who has not come
under your suspicion. It is not
fair!"
"Oh, defend the hero ,by ail
means!" Ile shook her Tightly,
and there was more than mere sac
casttle raillery in this tone and
action, "Did I say anything against
your gallant captain!" Swiftly his
mood and tone changed, "But why
this sudden championship? What
has Masters, done to deserve your
defence? He made a mese of your
flight, anyway, and he has lost a
valuable machine into the bargain!"
"The whole thing was an anci-
dent!" said Leonie, quickly, "Cap-
tain .Masters saved my life and did
all he could, to put out the flames,"
"He did what he was paid to do!"
snapped Powell. "Never mind him!
1 am"tired of his name!" Abruptly
l
re pulled her to ltim, 'And now let's
celebrate your return!" He releas-
ed her and took up his wlneghtss.
"here's to Yeti, Leonie, end to your.
sate flight on the Golden Hindi"
