Listowel Man is
Placed Under Arrest
Listowel, Dee. 20.- Accused of
false, pretences in connection with
the stib•division promotions of
Hubba & Hubbs, Toronto real es-
tate broker, „J, Cecil Hamilton, 50,
for 29 years a leading barrister of
Listowel, was arrested hero by In -
specter E. D. L. Hammond of the
Ontario Provincial police,
The arrest of Hamilton brings to
three those who 'are. accused, 'after
an intensive investigation into the
reputedly fraudulent' operations of
the Hubbs company, "
. Harold W. Hubbs, 66 Indian'
, road, Toronto, .prbsident of the.
company, and Llewellyn Burling-
ham, 146 Northcliffe boulevard,
Lakeview, secretary -treasurer, were
arrested a week 'ago and are held in
jail in- Toronto under $100,000 bail
each on .charges of conspiracy to
fraud.
More than $326,000 in supposedly
bogus land mortgages is said to be
involved.
The Listowel lawyer, after his
arrest; was remanded for eight days
when he appeared before Magist-
rate T. L. Hamilton here. He was
released on 325,000 bail
The preliminary hearing probab
1y will be held in Stratford or in
Toronto.
• The two false pretences charges
it the warrant upon which Hamil•
ton was arrested alleged that he aid-
ed Hubbs and Burlington in induc-
ing residents of Listowel and vicin-
ity to take mortgages on lakeshore
property near Toronto. •
Misrepresentation Charged
In mortgaging the property, the
crown declares, the company repre-
sented to more than 100 investors
that the land was fully improved
with the residences. As a matter of
fact, it is alleged, the land was
mortgaged.
The Hubbs company, active in
sub -division promotions. throughout
Ontario for many years, is -unable
to pay off the mortgages; the com-
plaints against its members assert
In addition to obtainine ft:'tdu-
lent nnortgageson the lakeshore
land, provincial investigators declare
non-existent houses have ben in-
sured against fire by Hubbs and his
associates.
Several of the `100 or 'more per-
sons who took mortgages during the
past several years on the sub -di-
visions of the Hubbs company are
•said to be prominent residents of
Listowel and are reputed to include
a member of the provincial parlia-
ment end a well-known merchant
of this city. There are also a num-
ber of Toronto persons involved in
the case.
• The investigations into the activ-
ities of the Toronto reality firm
was started three weeks ago on
complaints of Listowel residents
who had invested their life savings
and who wondered whether they
were ever going to get back the
money ths'y gave the Hubbs com-
pany.
The investigation was conducted
by W. J. Aurthur Flair and Arthur
W. Rogers of the Provincial Attor-
ney -General's Department, under
• the Hon, W. H. Price.
After three days' further invest-
igation in end around this town. In-
specter Hammond and Mr, Fair
walked in Hamilton's office and
'placed him under arrest at 5.30
last evening.

Rev. Mr. Alp is Secretary of the
Huron Presbytery ' of the United
Church -Will Accept Call.
Blyth, Dec. 18. -Rev. W. R. Alp,
13, A. received word this week of
a call that has been offered him as
assistant to Rev. Dr. Woodside,
pastor of Chalmers United Church,
Ottawa. This speaks well for Mr.
Alp, as it is one of the best chur-
rhos and richest congregations in
Ottawa, having a membership of
about 1,400,
It is altogether likely that Mr.
Alp will accept, as the stipend is
33,300 ' and besides it is a great
advancement for him. Mr. Alp has
been pastor in Auburn for a great
nary years, first as pastor of the
Presbyterian and then, when union
was formulated there, as pastor of
the United Church. He is compara-
tively a young man and this should
1.e e. stepping stone to still something
better, as he is a good speaker and
a fine personality.
