Plot of Picture is Cleverly Developed °'Lady Raffles", the Columbia Pictures production which will be shown at the Grand Theatre on Monday is a • skilfully developed drama of the adventures which be- fall a clever young woman whose life is a mystery. It is a picture of surprises and queer twists in which strategy and apt manoeuvering hold the interest. The plot revolves around a valuable necklace, which changes hands with the dexterity displayed by sleight-of-hand pet - formers, and the awakening of lov in the heart of the heroine. Estel Taylor, wife of Jack Dempsey has tricky role which she handles i masterly style displaying the tuoc of an artist. Miss Taylor is support ed by a strong cast including, Bo land Drew, Lilyan Tashman, Earnes Hilliard and Winifred Landis, - The picture was directed by William Neill. Church Notes St. Johns Church. 'Roses of Picardy" This famous I n•lish picture will be ; rayed at the Grand Theatre on due day (Labor I)avl and Tuesday, Sept, 2nd and .3rd;- "hoses of Picardy" is a war film that is differ ent. It is based on 1t, H. Mottrase's stores. "The Spanish Farm," and "Sixty -Four, Ninety -Four," Juse, as Mottram s Spanish Allen" is, in the words of John Galsworthy, "unlike any war book that 1, least, have met with," so the film is unlike any war film that hes yet been made. 1t is not cart in the conventional mould of war melodrama, beet it is more concerned with the effect of war upon the character and emotions of individuals involved. Whilst the at- mosphere and background of war have been created with realism, the play is essentially one of intimate drama and in fact only two episodes of fighting are shown its the film. The first is a :night attack in which the young Lieutenant Skene has his baptism of fire. In this episode the creeping barrage is vividly depleted. The other fighting scenes are con- nested with the grim defence of Hondebecq in the great German push of 1918. Haig's famous "Back to the Wall" message is shown on the screen. Tthe seenes of this defence were filmed in a specially built 'town" at Nice representing the big gest "set" yet constructed for a British film, The Armistice scenes ought to create comment as are also the final scene climax of th Mountaineers, Indians Fight in "Wolf Song. The romantic lives of the "moun- tain men" of 1840 who fought In- dians, killed grizzlies and made love to eager senoritas with equal en- thusiasm are brought to the motion picture screen in Paramounts gor- geous love -thriller, "Wolf Song" which conies to the Grand Theatre on Friday of this week for 2 daya In this Victor Fleming production, taken from the novel of Harvey Fer- gusson, Gary Cooper takes the part of a young trapper who has made his way westward from Kentucky to the wild plains and mountains of ttfe Southwest, Lupe Velez, Castilian beauty from Mexico City, has the role of a rich daughter of the Span- ,:sh Dons who have i,ntablished their civilization in the 'and invaded -by the "mountain men." Louis V oL• helm, whose broken nose has made him known as the "man with the million dollar face," has a featured ' role as Cooper's trapper buddy, with Constantine Rornanoff, former contender for the heavy -weight wrest ling championship, playing a burly part as one of the mountaineers. The versatile and exotic Lupe has plenty of opportunity in the film to exhibit her powers as a dancer and love. maker -and site doesn't let the op- poitunity slip by. Cooper the hand- some and. rugged "man among sten" extends himself to put everything he has into the part of a "wolf -eating" he-man.
