Won Scholarship.
Mrs. (Rev.) Fowler is in receipt
of a cl

Tribune, stating that her nephew,
Edwin Wyckoff,. has been awarded a
11,000 Reeder scholarship at the De
Pauw University. Edwin was held
the highest in esteem in his graduat-
ing class of 82, high grade and
church attendance and considered an
ideal type of American manhood.
Edwin is 16 years old.
Brother Dead.
The 'Clinton News Record reports
the death of Frank Chowen, a bro-
ther of 0. M. Chowen, now of Kin-
cardine, and a former C. N. R. agent
at Brussels:—Word was received last
week of the death which took place
in Brooklyn, N. Y., on Sunday, July
J, G .
7th, of Frank Chown., son of G.
Chowen of Clinton, Mr, • C•howen's
,death was due to injuries received as
the result of a fall. He is survived
by his wife and one grown son. In-
terment was made in Brooklyn.

Ontario were elected at Ottawa on
Wednesday evening last, North Hur

Died in the West.
Word was received here of the
ri.atit of William Miller, which oct-
er+tree 1 at th.. home of his son, Geo.
at Souris, Man. No further particul-
ars are at hand. Deo, axed was an
employee on the G. T. R. section here
for creat many years, and for the
past few yr• u`., !tea' resided with hiss
on in the West. The remains were
brought to Pru ar't far interment
and funeral si ill be held today. He
was about 75 years of age. Fuller
particulars will he given next week.
Had a Collision.
About 9 o'clock Ia:.t Thursday
night two cars met head -un on the
boundary ai;out one-half mile east
of Bluevale, in front of Wm. Bal-

Races at Goderich.
Owing to accidents and withdraw-
als the '2.15 Stale mule at Goderich
on Civic Holiday will be an open
race for the same money, namely,
• $1000. Gorierich Association has
gone the limit in placing 82,800 at
the disposal of the trotters and pac-
lers this season and the owners should
notify Dr. Clark at once if they in-
tend to compete for this large purse

On Monday morning William
Styles fell from a load of hay, near
his home, and had his collar bone
broken, three ribs cracked and a
thumb dislocated. He has been in
a serious condition since the acci-
dent, a nurse being in attendance.

Regina, July 19—In a gallant at-
tempt to save the life of a young.
girl • 11 the lake at Crystal Beach,
Wednesday night, Jack Montgomery
18, a youth from near Seaforth, Ont
lost his life, Montgomery was a
summer visitor et the resort near
Harris,' southwest of Saskatoon.
Shortly after 7 o'clock, a 15 -year-
old'
girl named Tessler got into diffi•

eulties in the lake. The Seaforth lad
plunged in, and swam to the struggl-
ing girl. He made a gallant effort 1
to bring her to shore, Others camel
to give assistance, and the exhausted ,
girl was rescued. Fatigued by the
attempt to rescue the Tessier girl, 1
Montgomery sank from sight. His
body was later recovered. An inquest
%viii be held.
Body Brought Back
John Montgomery, an employee
of the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Telephone Company, whose home is
at Winthrop, received a message on
Wedensday stating that his son Jack
had been drowned near Saskatoon,
Sask„ on Wednesday evening, while
attempting to rescue a girl from
drowning. The young man, who' was
!3 years of age, had been working
in a factory in Wingham for several
months before going west about a
month neo to a:si.4 his uncle, John
Si xnson, nn the farm.

burial and the funeral was held from

Much Laughter it,
"Garden of Eden."
The original Garden of Eden was
a place where sin,
sorrow and
re-
pining were unknown. But, quite
possibly, humor was also unknown,
since so much of laughter is based
on the misfortune of others. Cer-
tainly comedy is far from unknown
in Corinne Griffith's producton of
"The Garden of Eden" which will
be shown here for the first time on
Monday when it opens at the Grand
