The smoke stack at the old woollen
mill was taken down on Monday af-
ternoon. Messrs. Jno. Williamson,
Jack McCosh and Jno. Crerar were

Former Resident of Brussels
Passes Away.
Mrs. Thomas J. Johnston passed a-
way on Friday, May 17th, 1920, at
her home 169 Victoria Ave., Buffalo
N.Y., after a somewhat extended ill-
ness, Mrs. Johnston will be remem-
bered by many former residents as
Hattie, second daughter of Robert
and Mary Armstrong. She had made
her home in Buffalo for over thirty
years. Mr. Johnston was a former
resident of Lucknow, Ont. Besides
her husband, Mrs. Johnston is surviv-
ed by her two daughters,_Mrs. Mary
E. Taylor and Mrs. Lulu Schoenborn.
Two sisters, Mrs. Mary C. Grabill, of
Toronto, and Mrs, Ellen Drewe, of
Winnipeg, as well as bur brothers,
David Armstrong, of Buffalo, Bert of
Toronto; Robert M. of Pasadena,
Cal., and William E. of Buffalo, also
survive. All were former residents
of Brussels.

Closes Pastorate on Sunday.
Rev. F. L. Lewin closes his pas-
torate of St. John's Church on Su_
day next. Both Melville and the
United church withdraw their even-
ing service, to attend the last service
of Rev. Mr. Lewin. The departing
Rector has been very, popular with
both congregations during his pastor-
ate here.

ever turned away without a kindly
word, a cherry smile, and such sub-
stance as she was able to bestow.
She was particularly interested in
the great missionary , cause, and in
her home she mainthined a "Miss-
ionary Box in which was placed from
time to time the various articles
which she collected, and also made
herself, to relieve the condition of
brave missionaries laboring in the
home and' foreign fields. In fact it
might be fairly said that her whole
life was given in service to others.
Mrs. Wood has been ill for several
years and confined to her, hone for
the past six months. She bore her
sufferings very patiently and brave-
ly, and was perfectly resigned to
and contented with the lot which
had been provided for her liy the

material aid. Her greatest public
activity was in connection with the
Park Street United church and the
Sunshine Society, and she was most

the members of those two organiza-
tions. She never sought the lime-
light in the good she did for others,
but she was constantly giving of her
time and means to further all worthy
causes in the community.
Her death means a distinct loss In
the city, and thb' whole district will
join in extending heart -felt condol-
ences to the bereaved members of
her family. Mrs. Wood was born in
New Hamburg, Ontario, over 66
years ago and was before her marri-
age Miss Adina Lashinger, the dau-
ghter of the late Joseph and Mrs.
Laschinger, of that place. She was
one of a family of twelve children
only three of whom are now living,
one brother A. G. Laschinger, of
Point Edward and tete? sisters Mrs.
S. M. Gusier of Detroit and Mrs. M.
A. Ernst of Lakewood, Ohio. She

Rockwood and Brussels and finally
joined her husband here seven years
ago, after he had established the
Wood Knitting mills in this city.
Her chief characteristics was her
charitable disposition. Her home
was constantly open, to extend hos-
